The Woes of NZC

And Hopkins serves no purpose in the NZ side at all except if McCullum dies, then I would pick Bevan Griggs who can actually bat. Hopkins ahead of Sinclair and Fulton is a disgrace, end of story.
Gareth Hopkins
FC Average - 30.26
List A Average - 23.15

Bevan Griggs
FC Average - 27.76
List A Average - 17.75

Griggs can bat? Peter Fulton was injured when the squad was named for the South African tour, while Matthew Sinclair has been an average List A and ODI batsmen (especially compared to his exploits in the longer form). The idea behind Hopkins selection, initially, was that McCullum would play as a specialist batsmen.

I'm a firm believer in the ability of Hamish Marshall. Of course he has amounted, to date, to a mediocre international batsman. However, I think there's a lot to be read into his improvement in first-class cricket (non-Test) after he started playing internationals. Grossly mishandled IMO.
There has been big improvements in his batting since his international selection, and that shows how the exposure to top level bowlers has aided his growth and development. He's slaughtered county attacks for a few years now, and has done well domestically the last couple of seasons. Bracewell's persistance with him when Marshall was grossly out of form hasn't aided his cause, because now most of the public think he is useless and if he was to be selected again then there would be public outrage, despite whether or not he deserved selection.
