For opners I'd like to see How and Cumming now. The reasons I'd have How instead of Papps are:

A. Classier player

B. How many nineties has Papps scored?

Yes it was one innings but it's one innings that Papps hasn't had on this tour. Give him a go I say, nothing to lose.

Are we talking about Tests or ODIs?

Well the 90 was in reference to ODI's, but I'd like to see How have another run in tests too. The only concern is how well he counters genuinely fast bowling but we'll find that out as soon as Steyn returns and then when he faces Brett Lee in the Chappel-Hadlee, assuming he plays.

Also, i don't remember How playing a cut shot, but that isn't a real major concern. At laest not for tests anyway.

The cut shot is a very important shot in the repertoire of a Test batsmen, although one can prosper without it, it is infinitely better to be able to play it well.

I was very impressed with the way How played during that 90, he took his time to get going but built a solid platform and then accelerated later in his innings. I still don't think he's Test material though, and Papps>>>How IMO.

I was agreeing with you until then. I do think Papps is no where near last seasons form though but for now we need someone who knows how to stay in. Papps seems to have forgotten.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. In saying this, Papps did look damn awful in the two Tests against South Africa, and I suppose that was the price we payed for only having two specialist openers in the squad.

Papps lacks in both departments. How has more class IMO, he was just unfortunate to run into Lasith Malinga with an unsorted LBW problem. Hopefully after the advice Crowe gave him he has corrected this.

in regard to the How v Papps thing, Id pick How, I dont think he will become a star player but he might become an adequate one.

How is a strong back foot player as opposed to Papps whos a front foot plodder. I just think being good on the back foot is a neccesity for a test opener, Papps doesnt seem to have that.

V Bangladesh Id have

1)How
2)Sinclair ... nowhere else to put him.
3)Fulton'...... give him a chance to get a few good scores and some confidence in internationals..

4)Fleming.
5)Taylor .... has to be persisted with, all the talent in the world, just needs a few good scores, this guy will be one of our best ever and I cant believe some here are considering dropping him..
6)Oram .... if hes not fit, choose Ryder

Ross Taylor shouldn't be in the Test side at the moment anyway, and the only reason for his inclusion against South Africa was because Peter Fulton was injured and Matthew Sinclair is constantly out of favour with the selectors.

Jesse Ryder's talent doesn't justify selection as an all-rounder, he would be playing as a batsmen who could send down a few low quality overs. I'd say his bowling is not quite up to the standard of Styris.

It wasn't that long ago that How failed against Sri Lanka and we were begging for Papps. How times have changed.

Indeed, can remember it quite clearly. Without meaning to cause too much offence, I think some of the NZ posters on this site are swayed pretty damn easily and constantly change their minds based on one or two performances.

True. I changed my mind because here's how the performances stand as of now this season:

How: 1
Cumming: 1/2
Papps: 0

TBQH all our openers are fairly mediocre so we need to select them based on performances and after that awful performance by Papps he should be dropped. As Matt said, Papps looks like a bit of a front foot plodder as well, which isn't surprising seeing as here in NZ coaches regularly say "If in doubt, go forward." which is fine in NZ conditions, but internationally this can get you in big trouble.

I'll also accept I'm slightly biased, but really, its hard to defend Papps's results this year. If we get to the Bangladesh series and How hasn't made some more scores, then you could argue in Papps's favour. And if Papps succeeds gainst England and to a lesser extent, Bangladesh, then good on him, I'll happily admit I'm wrong.

Another factor is I find How a more appealling batsman to watch (Don't you dare naughty that) and I know who I'd rather watch get a 20 or 30 with the odd 50 and 100. (Assuming Papps can ever get that far again)

Bravo. Best thing you've ever said.

Will people be demanding my recall if I take a fiver for my club this year?

(ignoring the fact that I don't think I'll be playing again)

Anyway, I'll be at the Basin Reserve if I'm not jet-lagged from my flight back from the UK. Anyone is welcome to join me for a beer.

I'd like to see How get another opportunity to open against Bangladesh, with Taylor coming in at three, then Fleming, Vincent, Styris

So should I email you and ask for your mobile number so I can meet up with you at the Basin, or should I just rock up on the day and actually look for Heath Davis? :p
