Who should be Australia's next wicket-keeper?

I think atm the fight for the spot is pretty much between Ronchi and Haddin, though Gilly is still pretty much there but he is nearing retirement with every passing game so no matter whenever he retires who do you guys think is the best man to take the gloves from Gilly.

Haddin the Wade or Paine. Ronchi in ODIs maybe, but i think in Test Paine and Wade will end up being better options.

In terms of batting this is order:
- Haddin, Paine, Wade, Ronchi, Hartley and Croswaithe(sp)

In terms of keeping this is the order:
- Hartley, Haddin, Croswaithe(sp), Wade, Paine and Ronchi

Long run I think Ronchi keeping might let him down. His not that bad but a fair way below the rest. Wade, Paine and Haddin can make sides as specialist batsmen, so his ability to smack any attack around the world might not come into outside ODIs.

The little i've seen of Wade he looks the goods behind the stumps and with the bat, but so did Hartley and Croswaithe when they started. Paine a soild keeper, but again looks a little bit behind the rest.

Haddin, no contest.

Unless he drastically looses form, or Gilchrist hangs around for more than another 2 years in which case the selectors might reason he's too old and not the longterm option.
Great to have players like Ronchi around though, competition for spots can only be healthy, however I fear he won't have much of an international career, assuming Haddin takes the gloves off Gilchrist, he'll have started international cricket late and he's very fit so I can see him playing on until atleast 36, by which time Ronchi will be 32 or 33...and younger options (ie Wade who will be 25 or so) will be more attractive.

Ronchi has certainly done more with the bat than Paine or Wade so far, nobody doubts their potential but atm Ronchi the more accomplished FC batsman.

Isn't it a bit too early to start rating Wade, he has started off well but how he performs in the longer run is still to be seen.
Anyways Gilly is gonna retire from Odi cricket first (atleast we can assume he will) so Australia would need an opening batsman too so if Haddin comes in the team would he open for Australia because there isn't much room for him in the Australian middle order.

Micheal Clarke will probably open and Haddin down the order. Haddin a lot better middle order batsmen then opener and his record proves that.

I doubt Clarke would open unless Hussey refused the position.

Hussey is the better opening batsman, because he is a bloody opening batsman.

Clarke is a number 4 or 5, not an opener.

Only reason Clarke would open ahead of Hussey is if Hussey refused to open, or Ponting wanted Hussey to be the finisher of the innings like Bevan.

Hussey never/rarely opens in One Day cricket. North, Ronchi, Bandy, Rogers, Langer and co all opened ahead of him for WA.

Well, there's Shane Watson when fit. He's done very well up in the order in ODIs.

I've followed Wade's progress through junior carnivals for a few years now and seen him play a little, I think he's the real deal (with the bat atleast), I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon because he made 95 today.

I'd hope Haddin comes into the ODI side at 5/6/7 because domestically he's been far in the middle order than opening (although his move from opener to number 4 coincided with him doing alot of extra work on his batting and improving his technique so there might not be much in it). Who knows what the ODI side will look like a year or 18 months down the track, Hayden and Gilchrist will probably go about the same time so we could have Watson and Jaques opening or Jaques and Clarke.

Haddin is the man. Over the past couple of seasons he is averaging over 55 in the sheffield shield so i think he deserves his go. His keeping is solid without being fantastic, but there are no outstanding gloveman in the country at the moment.

But it's worht noting Haddin is no spring chicken any more and won't be around for a whole lot longer - at least not at his peak anyway.

I think long term Tim Paine or Adam Crosthwaite will be the man, but Haddin will be a very useful player in between Gilly's retirement and when they are ready for test cricket.

for the one day scene, hard to tell. Same story re: Haddin but i don't think Paine or Crosthwaite's batting is good enough for one-day cricket. Well Paine's a good batsman but doesn't score quick enough. I think Ronchi could be ODI keeper after Had's.

If Haddin doesn't get a decent shot at a Test and ODI career post-Gilchrist (hopefully that'll be soon, especially in ODIs) cricket's cracked one of its great injustices.

Hope he plays Tests until he's 36 or 37 and hope he averages in the mid-30s.

Also hope Watson gets first bash at an opening slot - alongside Hussey if Gilchrist and Hayden (as they should for mine) go soon.

Haddin will take over the ODI role sooner rather than later whether he will carry the test mantle is another thing.Gilly has said that he will stay with test cricket only for a while( I think so he can beat Bouchers record).Haddin maybe considered too old then and someone from out of the blue could get the nod.Maybe Hartley.

Ronchi in ODI's.

The best batsman of the lot (apart from Haddin) and also a great hitter,

Not sure about test cricket though he would need to improve his keeping.
