Could've been a candidate for an All Time Great XI but for..........

Silly title and not entirely accurate, just an excuse to list players who didn't quite achieve all they might have for whatever reason.

1. Barry Richards.........the South African ban
2. George Headley.........the war
3. Archie Jackson.........illness and early death
4. Graeme Pollock..........the South African ban
5. Lawrence Rowe..........having an allergy to grass and wool
6. Mike Proctor...........the South African ban
7. Drew Parry.............he wasn't conceived because his mother (Iris) had a migraine
8. Bob Taylor.............his career coinciding with Alan Knott
9. Jeff Thomson...........injuring his shoulder playing tennis in 1975
10. Headley Verity.........the war
11. Wayne Daniel...........not being rated as highly as he should have been by Clive Lloyd

and didn't Jeff Thomson injure his shoulder running into a team-mate?

I'd like to add: J.Wilson (Aus)...due to being born a hermaphrodite he/she wasn't sure whether or not to wear a box and was timed out in its first test while making the decision.

Roger was also constantly left out by the selectors

Vince van der Bijl - the SA ban again. I'v never even seen footage of the bloke bowl, but over 750 FC wickets at a shade over 16.5 apiece speaks for itself. Crying shame he never had the chance at the highest level.

Sid Barnes - WW2 & a "challenging" personality. 13 tests is too shallow a sample for any conclusions to be drawn, but his FC career figures are impressive enough to suggest he should've played more.

Actually Bart King (the fella in np10's avatar) is another. Were he not American or had the ICC (then the Imperial Cricket Council) decided to admit the US instead of the Windies as the 4th test playing nation, he could've been remembered as a genuine Great instead of merely (arguably) the greatest player from a non-test nation.

Thompson would not have made an all time great team even if he hadn't injured his shoulder.
Alphonso Thompson?

Truth is we'll never know what Jeff Thomson might have done had he not had the shoulder injury he had in 1976\77 (colliding with Turner). He came back and still, of times, bowled damn well. His average excluding his 1st and final 2 Tests (none of which he should ever, ever have played) is 26.47 - good, though obviously not all-time material.

Thomson is oft dismissed as a one-dimensional bowler, but he was far from it. It's unlikely he would've been all-time XI material, as he wasn't accurate enough, but one never knows, and in 74\75, 75, 75\76 (to an extent) and 77 (after the injury), his form was compelling.

So we agree.

He originally injured his shoulder playing tennis and missed the 6th Test of the 1974/75 Ashes series. He recovered well enough to help destroy the West Indies the following season. Whether the first injury weakened the shoulder and had any impact on the second injury I don't know, but yes you're right the "running into a team-mate" injury debilitated him more.
