The Slate is wiped clean , who would you like to see in Englands ODI squad

Its going to be interesting who is named on Friday. Firstly the issue of captaincy . Which I personally would like to see go to Pietersen. And I think the whole Collingwood being favourite doesn't make sense. Moores has said nothing , and because everyone wants him to be it doesn't mean at all that it will be.

With regards to the squad , Im assuming something like 15 names are going to be on the list.

Names were definatly going to see:

-Matt Prior
-Monty Panesar (Unless Moores feels that he doesn't want Panesar as a ODI player , possible),
-Kevin Pietersen
-Paul Collingwood

And I think the fact that theres only 4 names in that list , makes fridays selection so interesting. Sidebottom is very likely to be selected. But after that we're second guessing Moores. Trescothick could find himself opening with Cook (anyone thought about Tresco as captain? , although I think I remember him saying he didn't want to be England captain at all). Loye , Benning , Maddy have been talked up as openers , and I think Benning may get a call up.

As for the rest of the side , its a case of unless we can work out whats going on in Peter Moores' head , we don't know , but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few surprise names in the mix.

My Ideal Squad (I'm Guessing theres 15 players , but I might be wrong) :

-Kevin Pietersen (C)
-Marcus Trescothick
-Alastair Cook
-James Benning
-Ian Bell
-Paul Collingwood
-Ravi Bopara
-Dimitri Mascarenhas
-Jonothan Trott (Averaging 88 in FP Trophy this season)
-Jamie Dalrymple
-Monty Panesar
-Ryan Sidebottom
-Chris Tremlett
-James Kirtley
-Graham Onions

TBH, I'd be quite happy not to see MSP in there, for exactly the same reasons I stated after the WC. But I'm in no doubt he'll be picked. And probably, he'll bowl like he did in the winter, and people will say exactly the same as they did in the winter: "he should bowl like he did in Tests". Blackwell and Yardy would be preferable to me, not that I think either will amount to much, but just because they've looked better than MSP to date.

Equally, there's no real doubt in my mind Prior will play. I'm not sold on him, at all (and I'm still not in Tests, either - superb maiden series, beyond all question, but it's just one series to date) and I still think Read's probably a better OD batsman than him (at the risk of incurring the wrath of Kev [Goughy]).

I think Collingwood being favoured for the captaincy over Pietersen makes perfect sense, TBH - Pietersen needs to play, and even if the captaincy doesn't distract him, I don't even want people to be able to suggest it has. Collingwood's a much more mediocre player, but he had 3 sensational games at the end of the Australian series and showed his normal propensity to cash-in on non-ODI-standard sides. As we know, that deserves England captaincy.

It'll be ridiculous if Trott doesn't get picked, TBH, and I'm beginning to wonder if I wasn't a bit hasty on him. Give him a go, can't do much worse than Strauss, Vaughan et al. Would still like to see Afzaal in pending form this season, but he might be averaging 23 - if so, no.

The seamers are honestly a lottery. I don't ever want to see Hoggard or Kirtley anywhere near a ODI ever again, though. I'd even prefer Mahmood. Yes. I would. Him getting a flogging has at least happened just twice before, as opposed to the three or four times it's happened with Hoggard and Kirtley. No idea of Kirtley's form this season, mind.

I'd like to see something along the lines of this squad:

Collingwood (C)
Pietersen
Trescothick
Cook
Benning
Bell
Trott
Prior (would be interested to see whether Mustard comes into the frame though - he's had an excellent FP Trophy)
Mascarenhas
Loudon
Dalrymple
Sidebottom
Tremlett
Anderson
Onions

I'm going with the assumption that Bopara will miss the series through injury, otherwise he would certainly be in there.

I'd like to see a team of:

Trescothick
Benning
Cook
Pietersen
Collingwood (C)
Bell
Loudon
Prior
Mascarenhas
Sidebottom
Anderson

Sidebottom, Anderson and Mascarenhas to bowl their full 10 overs and the other 20 to be shared between Loudon, Collingwood and Benning.

Perhaps a little light on bowling, but the batting looks pretty strong imo.

Interesting thought about Cook at three... thinking along the Jayasuriya-Kalu-Atapattu lines. Maybe. :) But I think all in all I'd prefer have the openers opening and Benning (who is after all only a manufactured OD opener) at three.

As for Loudon... has he managed to get his career average much higher than 20 yet? Kent bias coming in IMO

For the 15 I'd like the squad to be...

Paul Collingwood (capt)
Kevin Pietersen
Ian Bell
Jamie Dalrymple
Andrew Strauss
James Benning
Jonathan Trott
Ravinder Bopara (depending on fitness)
Marcus Trescothick
Alistair Cook
Glen Chapple
Ryan Sidebottom
James Anderson
Monty Panesar
Liam Plunkett

And the X1

Alastair Cook/Marcus Trescothick
James Benning
Ian Bell
Kevin Pietersen
Paul Collingwood
Jonathan Trott/ Ravi Bopara
Matt Prior
Glen Chapple
Monty Panesar
Ryan Sidebottom
James Anderson

Can't see the point picking Chapple now, TBH. And there's a certain romanticism in him playing for England once... against Ireland.

He's never been anything more than decent, anyway, TBH. I had my doubts about him as a ODI bowler last year, even if he's better than Bresnan et al.

Nah, Jonathan Batty is a) too old and b) has never done much at one-day level, however good he is in the longer game.

If I was an England supporter, I'd be regretting Symonds not taking up the offer years ago, tbh.

I posted this in the Michael Vaughan thread yesterday, but it's probably more relevant in this one so I'll post it here:

(Note: the "2007" section is for List A matches in England this domestic season)

1. Ali Cook
ODIs: 80 runs @ 40.00
List A: 818 runs @ 32.72
2007: 175 runs @ 44.50

2. James Benning
ODIs: N/A
List A: 1788 runs @ 35.76
2007: 242 runs @ 40.33

3. Ian Bell
ODIs: 1383 runs @ 35.46, 6 wickets @ 14.66 (6.00)
List A: 4114 runs @ 35.16, 33 wickets @ 34.48 (5.29)
2007: 24 runs @ 12.00

4. Kevin Pietersen
ODIs: 2026 runs @ 56.27
List A: 1778 runs @ 50.80
2007: 123 runs @ 61.50

5. Paul Collingwood
ODIs: 2966 runs @ 34.89, 64 wickets @ 37.90 (4.99)
List A: 7103 runs @ 32.88, 166 wickets @ 34.39 (4.77)
2007: 89 runs @ 29.66, 2 wickets @ 8.50 (3.00)

6. Jonathan Trott
ODIs: N/A
List A: 3266 runs @ 41.87, 34 wickets @ 25.32 (5.67)
2007: 254 runs @ 84.66, 0 wickets @ infinity (6.14)

7. Matt Prior
ODIs: 240 runs @ 20.00
List A: 3032 runs @ 25.47
2007: 107 runs @ 35.66

8. Dimitri Mascarenhas
ODIs: N/A
List A: 3124 runs @ 23.31, 227 wickets @ 24.15 (4.18)
2007: 159 runs @ 31.80, 5 wickets @ 24.40 (2.90)

9. Chris Tremlett
ODIs: 6 wickets @ 44.16 (5.01)
List A: 134 wickets @ 23.51 (4.51)
2007: 9 wickets @ 30.00 (4.02)

10. Ryan Sidebottom
ODIs: 2 wickets @ 42.00 (6.00)
List A: 139 wickets @ 30.26 (4.26)
2007: 0 wickets @ infinity (4.23)

11. James Anderson
ODIs: 94 wickets @ 27.75 (4.79)
List A: 158 wickets @ 26.11 (4.66)
2007: 6 wickets @ 32.66 (4.26)

12. Monty Panesar
ODIs: 16 wickets @ 39.00 (4.52)
List A: 27 wickets @ 35.59 (4.38)
2007: N/A

Panesar to play if the pitch looks to be somewhat of a turner, in which case Tremlett misses out.

Bopara, Flintoff and Trescothick to all come in when they are available - Bopara could well end up solely a squad member by then though if all goes well with Bell and Trott.

Tremlett doesn't get mentioned much, but his record is pretty good in both forms of cricket and he's bowled well this season. I know he can't bat and his fielding makes Monty look good, but the other candidates can't bowl so it's an easy decision on that basis. Dimitri won't get picked - I'm pretty confident of that - but I don't really know why he shouldn't be. Sure, he's military medium pace and his batting is a bit agricultural, but given the lack of options in general, to not ever give a go despite his very good one day cricket would be ridiculous.

My other squad members would be Dalrymple, Plunkett and Allenby.

6. Jonathan Trott
ODIs: N/A
List A: 3266 runs @ 41.87, 34 wickets @ 25.32 (5.67)
2007: 254 runs @ 84.66, 0 wickets @ infinity (6.14)
He was great in NZ domestic a couple seasons ago. Definately a decent player. He however, is not used enough as a bowler considering his role as an all-rounder in NZ domestic cricket which made him a name that we expected to see in the English team soon. He certainly is talented and deserves a go.

I think Englands line-up if it was to feature a lot of these players would most probably be a more competitive ODI side in the future than the side we saw in the world cup. Looking forward to NZ vs. Eng 2008.

My XI weould be:
Cook
Benning
Bell
KP
Collingwood (C)
Bopara (if not fit Clarke)
Prior
Broad
Sidebottom
Anderson
Monty

And the back ups:
Trott
Dalyrymple
Tremlett

Do we really need more than 14 in a three match ODI and two match 20/20 series? What I do NOT want to see: Vaughan and Strauss in the squad, Solanki as captain (D Lloyd suggested that. Thank god he ain't coach any more.). Solanki averages 26 in ODIs. If we wanted a captain with a crap average keep Vaughan. And the following seam bowlers should NOT be picked: Mascarenas (Rose Bowl specialist). Mahmood and Bresnan (Do I need to say why?) or Plunkett (let the guy learn to bowl first)

Has Trott definitely declared for us? Obviously he's a de facto Pom as he's a UK passport holder & not classed as an overseas player @ Warwicks, but I haven't heard any announcements on his desire to play for England reported in the media. & I'm fairly sure Allenby hasn't done his residential qualification anyway, so he'd be a non-starter.

I still quite like the look of Prince's XI (even if Dimi has next to no chance) apart from Tremlett tho; I think he largely pissed on his chips after his timorous appearances down under in the winter.

Other possible bowling options not mentioned so far are Kirtley & (at a slight stretch) Tim Murtagh who's been doing rather well for Middlesex since he moved from Surrey and has played age group cricket for England previously.

Cheeky! Nah, it's certainly not a Kent bias in this instance (although I will admit that I have a tendency to veer in that direction - Tredwell, anyone? ;) ) - I'm actually pretty annoyed with him for leaving Kent and going to Warwickshire, so I certainly wouldn't favour him in any way above anyone else.

I'm just thinking about the spinning allrounder spot that has been filled with limited success by the likes of Dalrymple and Yardy. Blackwell has had a go as well, and although he's obviously a powerful hitter (not that he's displayed it on the international stage), I just plain don't like him  so I thought Loudon would be a good option. That said, I think he's the best of a poor current bunch, and I imagine that Rashid will make the position his own in years to come.

I like having Benning at the top because he's likely to make more of the fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs than Cook.

dont have a squad but i would like to see owais shah and harmison back in the odi squad
Retired from ODI's...

No one's mentioned Gidman yet - he's another man that's been in great form this season, and has captained at England A level.
