Future England Prospects?

Its been interesting lately with all the retirements occurring and the talk that Australia is going to be toppled from their no. 1 status in both forms of the game. I just want to create this thread to see who England will have in their team for the next ten years to combat the Australians. (Strangely though for me, as an Australian, I'm more interested in the English game then ours).

I think the likes of Rashid and Bopra are givens to be in the team in the next 5 years. On the other hand, my thoughts drift towards even younger players. Please comment on this list of players and there likelihood to wear the 3 lions on their chest.

Varun Chopra
Mark Pettini
Moeen Ali
James Harris
Tim Ambrose
Billy Godleman
Tom Smith

godleman is a nailed on future england player imo, seen quite a bit of him, fidgety at the crease and often plays within himself but can show aggression when needed, very calm at the crease and plays with a maturity way ahead of his years.

like the look of tom smith, should get a go in the odi arena at some point but knowing this selection panel....

Varun Chopra has the potential to be a test player, good temperament and technique, bit of talent. I don't think Pettini is a test batsman but he is a strong county batsman. Moeen Ali may well end up like Kabir and Kadeer, his cousins.

Varun Chopra
Mark Pettini
Chopra and Pettini don't seem to be coping too well with the added pressure of the retirement of Andy Flower and Ronnie Irani leaving a gaping hole in their team's top order.

I would be surprised if Pettini didn't play international cricket. Him and Palladino have Italy to fall back on if they fail to make it for England. Italy would be a much better unit with those two and Joe Scuderi!!

Great to see you naming two Essex lads in that list, Chopra and Pettini both look to be very solid batsman and hopefully excellent servants for their county as the years go by.

James Harris and Billy Godleman have had excellent starts to their careers, but that doesn't really count for much if they go off the boil over the next couple of seasons. Definately two players to watch though as they appear to be supremely talented. Tim Ambrose is hardly "young", compared to the other players you have listed anyway but he has been in fine form this season.

Player who I recall seeing and liking the look of in England a couple of years ago was James Hildreth, I remember him playing well albeit briefly against Australia in a tour game I watched and fielding for England in the tests, had big raps on him then and seems to be having a great season (890 runs @ 68, 4 hundreds). What do those of you who have seen a bit more of him think of his England prospects ?

Didn't Hildreth have a terrible season last year which brought comparisons with the equally talented but ultimately wasted Mark Lathwell?

Certainly having a better year this time around by the looks of things.

He aveaged 34 last year which doesn't do justice to his talent but certainly isn't terrible.

He has been mentioned favourably this year, but he does play his home games on an absolute road (I think there's been two scores of 800+ on it this year already!) so that may count against him. Dunno how many of his tons have been made at Taunton tho.

I was a bit surprised he wasn't named in our "A" team for the one day game v the Windies as he scores fairly quickly & is reputedly a good fielder too.

Joe Denly at Kent is another who's had several favourable mentions in reports I've read this season. Being a specialist opener is probably to his advantage too what with Strauss's poor trot & Tres still not committing himself to a comeback.

Just had a look at his cricinfo profile after reading your comments and I have to say he has had a very good start to his First Class career, right up there with Godleman and Harris.

Harris looks like a real prospect as an allrounder, I'd say in 3-4 years he should be in the ODI/Test side.

Denly's going well again today, he's 76* against an attack featuring Anderson, Cork, Smith and Murali. He also carried his bat against Clark, Warne and co at Hampshire earlier in the season. I can see him making up the England top 3 with Cook and Godleman for years to come.

Edit: Great. Denly out for 77.

That is true, but it was only his 2nd full season in the Somerset 1st team. I seem to remember a certain Ian Bell suffering the 2nd season blues as well & look were he is now... Anyway, Hildy is certainly looking a lot more solid this year & has built some great innings.

Hopefully we can get him out early tomorrow.

I think Denly will be the next batsman called up to the Academy with Godleman. Compton is going through 2nd season syndrome.

Out of the names mentioned so far...

Tom Smith - has looked a heck of a prospect to me ever since I saw him at u19 level. The ability to hold lines and lengths at his age (and he's always had it) is not something you see every day. He just needs to start taking a few wickets.

Billy Godleman - looks a hell of a prospect, but still very early on in his career.

Joseph Denly - pretty well as-above.

James Hildreth - been around and had the wraps a while now really, needs to start doing a bit more - and might just be doing exactly that.

Moeen Ali - whoever said he's probably on the same road as his cousins is on the right track IMO.

James Harris - incredible start for a 16-17-year-old, but let's not get too carried-away yet. It'll probably be 2 years or so before we even know if he's The Real Deal or not.

Varun Chopra - not as good as the other young Essex opener who's been in the Test team a year but certainly a hell of a prospect.

Mark Pettini - overrated.

Tim Ambrose - been around for ages now (started out in 2001), just one of a fair galaxy of 'keepers currently jostling for position. And probably not that high up, either.
