The week of all weeks for NZ Cricket

This coming week will determine who the new NZ Cricket coach will be and who the new NZ captain will be.

It seems from media reports that Bracewell will be retained as coach with Vettori taking on the ODI captaincy and Fleming hanging onto the Test captaincy job.

I wouldn't agree with any of the decisions personally, and would like to see John Wright get the coaching job with Jacob Oram taking on the captaincy with Scott Styris as his deputy in both forms of the game.

What do the rest of you think?

I think Vettori would make a good captain, but who ever it is, I think it works better if the same person is in charge of both ODI and Tests:)

Well if he is there they may as well take advantage of his services he offers to cricket.

I would be very pleased if John Wright took over the coaching role for both Test and ODI cricket, the sooner we get rid of John Bracewell the better. Hopefully once he goes it means we can start making some sensible squad selections instead of messing around with guys like the Marshalls etc.

For the captain, I am firmly against Daniel Vettori taken over the reigns but I really can't see anyone else being given that honour/responsibility. If it was up to me then I would make Peter Fulton the skipper, with Scott Styris as his vice-captain to help out for a few years until Fulton really comes into his own.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Wright for coach. Captaincy issue is interesting, because I'm not sure of Styris or Oram's style. I think Styris would be better than Oram...that said I don't see what Vettori does particularly in ODI's. A bit aggressive maybe but IMO I think that could work for us in the shorter form and he deserves a run until a more apparent captain puts his hand up.

Just read an article where wright said he had unfinished business with NZ cricket and it sounds like they might sign him up. I hope so. Its time for a change.

TBH, I think it works best if the best man for the ODI job gets the ODI job and the best man for the Test job gets the Test job. :)

You shouldn't jeapardise your Test chances in order to improve your ODI ones and likewise, it's pointless jeapardising your ODI chances just in the name of "continuity".

I am yet to see it work well, in the Aust. set up anyway

I would like to see Oram as captain as I believe he has the personality and the nous to do so, but the inevitable will occur, with Vettori who was groomed under the Bracewell/Fleming reigme likely to take over.
If it were down to Oram and Vettori on an even start, I don't see how Vettori can stand out over Oram, apart from the whole injury concern thing. Although if Oram was to become captain, I wouldn't be surprised if he reduced the bowling even further and concentrated on batting although that would effect the balance of the team.

However, back in 2004, when Oram was predominantely a bowling all-rounder, he ruled himself out of contention for captaincy, I wonder where he stands now?

But both remained excellent Test captains.

In any case, didn't Taylor choose to step down from ODIs?

I'd like to see a fresh approach. New CEO, new coach, new captain. So I'd go for John Wright as coach. If he lasted for nearly 5 years with India then I think he either had a good drug regime or learnt yoga or is a really savvy coach. Maybe all three.

Re the captain. Why not go for the longer term approach and appoint Brendan McCullum. First, unlike Vettori, Styris and Oram he does not seem to spend long periods of time out of the game through injury (hope I haven't jinxed him) and he is quite young. Fleming was young when first appointed and he lasted 10 years - gives stability. Also I love his enthusiasm.

I would not have 2 captains - IMO - works best with 1 captain.

If you all laughed yourself silly re McCullum as captain then what is wrong with Vettori being captain? He has done well when he has been captain.

Also, did anyone see this article? http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/dailynews/4090410a1823.html

I agree with the other guys, Wright for coach. As the other guy said, if you can survive in India and have success then you must be good. Also if Fleming remains in the ODI team then he might as well be captain (I am of the strong beleif he should captain in both forms). He cops alot of flak from idiots who go on about how it's his and McMillan's fault when we lose (Bracewell cops it even more) but for tactics and leadership then there is no one better than Flem. IMO his leadership has been diluted by Bracewell who is known to be his own man and I think his forceful personality may have made him take control of everything somewhat. I don't beleive Fleming would have endorsed the Marshall twins as much as Bracewell did/does for example.

If Fleming is test captain only then would it be better to have a specialist ODI and test teams bar a few players? It would be weird to have two different captains. So bar a few much needed players like Bond then two different teams could work.

Of course Id much rather Wright as coach and Fleming as captain of both forms.
