Hmmm, I reckon that once he's picked, he'll stay picked (unless he gets injured or plays atrociously) ie if he plays in the ODIs against the windies I reckon we can expect to see him in for Strauss against India.
Some reports I've read indicate that it will be Flintoff who takes his place when he is fit, which would give Strauss a fair few innings to get it right, Not excited by the idea of Vaughan opening though, though he might as well be opening at the moment. Also, love Bell at 6 and don't want him to bat anywhere else
Agree on both counts - always hated Vaughan opening (and Bell, for that matter, though thankfully he's only done it in one Test) and Bell surely has to stay at six now.
As said, though, Vaughan opening and Bell at three are both terrible ideas. Not sure why Bopara deserves to come in ahead of Shah, either.
The idea has merit because Bopara is in good touch, I'm not sure how well Owais Shah is going but Bopara has been churning out the runs for Essex. Of course I would have Shah in my side at #3 before I brought Bopara in at #6.
I realise that Shah has been the better player over the course of his career, I'm just mentioning that he isn't in particularly good form at the moment, while Bopara has been in the runs recently, thus lending some merit to the idea that Bopara could get a Test cap.

No it has never happened before, but seeing as how both Trescothick and Cook are openers then there is no reason why it wouldn't work.
Eeek, haven't been keeping my eye on the ball as much as I should be this season. Didn't realise he'd been so poor of late.
Bopara's calmness in the few ODIs he's played so far has been little short of extraordinary. But Shah has a much, much wider range of shots and in the last 4 or 5 years has been good at using them.
