Ashraful named as new captain

And must be about a 99% chance of taking over the ODI captaincy permanently.
If I was in charge it wouldn't be the case, but it would be foolish to think that somebody else will get the captaincy over him.

Yup, totally. With a crux of senior players around him (Oram, Styris, Vettori) I feel he would do a very good job. Looks like a natural leader.
He's not even totally assured of his place in the side as yet. Don't think he has even captained a State side yet either has he? Vettori is the best option although I know you think he's arrogant or something (which I don't see myself)

Chris Harris has been the captain of Canterbury for a long time and they have no reason to replace him. I feel he has done enough to be assured of a spot at either #3,#4 or #5 in the batting order in ODI cricket. As far as Tests goes, well we don't play them so it's irrelevant. Vettori is very arrogant on the field IMO, especially when it comes to his fielding and scathing words about other peoples fielding. Plus he doesn't tuck his shirt in.

 Senior guys of the team need to give the younger one a rocket or kick the ass sometimes. The only problem I have with his on-field demeanour is all the spitting and sticking his tongue out the whole time.

You might laugh, but it irks me in an unimaginable way. It's his job to play cricket and he should look tidy whilst doing so FFS. Ridiculous.

I can't see this move working very well, especially with how immature Ashraful is with his batting. Bashar was one of the best Test batsman (if not the best) that Bangladesh have had, and it's a shame to see him go like this. I doubt he'll be selected as a specialist bat, especially in the ODI's.
I agree. My personal opinion is that it is a bit premature . But Bangladesh will learn from their mistake one hopes.

What if Ashraful doesn't grow-up?
Ashraful's done a good job as a club captain. He's shown himself to be a handy tactician as well as a very lively leader on the field.

Which is surprising given what a first-class moron he is with the bat.

We're also short on players with captaincy experience.

He's a decent choice in the end.

Its going to be either a brilliant appointment or a crap one. As others have said he needs to grow up - that 50 in the last India test was the most brainless atempt to save a Test since Yousuf Yohana (as he then was ) did something similar in SA in 2003. You can't get away with that as a captain - and I don't think anyone can deny he has underachived since his debut - mind you scoring a centuary v Murali and co on debut probably wasn't the beat thing to do as it raised expectations when he was clearly still a learner. If the captaincy teaches him responsibility and helps his batting it will be good for BD...but if it doesn't...

why is it that most captains are batsmen? the only captaions I can recall being bolwer was shaun pollock and streak, any other in recent times?
India have had Bedi and Venkit and much before that Ghulam Ahmed.

Bowlers are suspected to have problems 'handling' themselves as bowlers when they are captains. There is a tendency to either overbowl or underbowl yourself. Thats generally the reason given and its not totally untrue.

Keepers should make very good skippers but there havent been many over time. I think keepers who are also very good batsmen should be good candidates for captaincy. Thus people like Sangakarra, Gilchrist credentials for captaincy.

Plus, particularly with fast bowlers, the proportion of time a bowling captain is going to be unavailable due to injury is way, way, higher than a batsman, particularly if they're a senior player. How many of the 'senior' fast bowlers around the world don't miss at least a match every season on average? There are far fewer batsmen on the "chronic injury risk" file.

Should have went with Mortaza. Ashraful is clearly not ready, and to expect him to raise his game in response to the added responsibility is too big of a gamble.

There was no way that Bangladesh were going to be able to save that Test match. I thought it was a good innings as it showed a bit of fight, something that the other batsman could learn from. I'm not suggesting that Bangladesh go out there and look to score at 5 an over, but actually show some resistance.
