Cricket Culture in Various Nations

A funny 'culture story'.

When I was 17 I was playing league cricket for money for the first time. I was also batting number 11.

So home or away (if away Id have to go find a shop), when we were batting the other guys would give the 'young guy' money and Id be given the reponsibility for getting porn. Meaning Id have to go buy porn mags and a copy of the Racing Post with their money to be read in the dressing room whilst we batted.

Week in week out it was the same and the shopkeeper local to our home ground got to know my (ie the teams) taste by the end of the season. :)

Slipped that one in casually eh?
Nah not at all. Its not a rare occurance or any real accomplishment as most top league sides will pay their players. It just generally means the players and teammates aren't young kids and are generally older guys. Kind of a qualifying remark given the nature of the story.

Agree 100%. Not sure how many ****s say that sort of crap, I've never encountered it in any way, shape or form - mercifully. The only chat I'm happy about on the field is "bit of an open face here, lads, let's work on this" or something along those lines.
About the worst I've had is a guy who thought I was backing up too far and told me he'd break my ****ing legs when we got back to the pavilion.. That was when I was about 14.. I hit him out of the attack and was then told even his team mates hated him.. All my best innings's have come against opponents I dislike..

Ok. I was reading Bradman's book and he talks about matches that took 4-5 weekends to finish. I guess that is not normal practice anymore. How about school matches? I remember as a kid going to watch 3-day high school matches in Colombo.
I think it still happens in some places, but never over here any more, that's long-gone. Or a long gone stories, you might say.

Unfortunatly we dont see that trend at International level, put aussie team in a losing condition and majority of time you see them at their worst, probably because they hate losing more than others. In case of subcontinent, I think it's just opposite.
Troll.

Another aspect to is that I think there is still a lot of reverance for the little aspects of cricket ettiquette; such as waiting for the umpires and fielding side to take the field before the batsmen do, not running if the ball has hit the batsman, etc.

Hmmm, it would be handy if these things were more ingrained in Victorian Cricket if the under 17 side of two years ago is anything to go by. Bastards.
