I thought we were selecting test XI. In that case its a bit 'off' to select two non-regular openers. This was my problem too. All the top playrs of the time seemed to be in the middle order

Too short a career to be considered in a last ten year career.

the real surprise for me is Irfan Pathan. It looks like the curreent form is influencing people which should not be the case when selecting a team for last ten years. He shouyld be a strong contender considering how few left handed bowlers there have been.

Of the 61 bowlers to get 50 or more test wickets over the last ten years, only 7 are left handers.

    1. Akram : 106 wkts at 26.5 each (Str Rate 60)
    2. Franklin 76 wkts at 28.2 each (Str Rate 47.1)
    3. Vaas : 259 wkts at 30.6 each (Str Rate 67.4)
    4. Pathan : 91 wkts at 30.8 each (Str Rate 55.8)
    5. Jayasuriya : 90 wkts at 32 each (Str Rate 81.0)
    6. Vettori : 228 wkts at 33.9 each (Str Rate 76.4)
    7. Adams : 112 wkts at 34.7 (Str Rate 69.1)

Surely he is a contender - 4th in bowling averages and 2nd in strike rate.

Add to that his batting average of 28. Vaas and Akram are both under 24 and Vettori is under 26.

Mark was one of the best ODI openers in the world, and indeed, after 1997 until his retirement averaged highly.

Steve, on the other hand, while a very fine ODI player averaged less than those others mentioned. While his extra all-round ability and captaincy would be handy but, IMO, I don't think he's worth a place in the 97-07 side.

90-00, he'd be one of my first choices.
