Watson wants to be test opener.

Surely for a straight batsman it has to be Hodge next in line for the non-opening spots. Add Watson in there too, and Voges apparently given his ashes squad selection, and doesn't look to be opportunities for D Hussey unless something weird happens.
Also its likley some young bats like Birt, Bailey, Crosgrove and other might also get a run ahead of him.

Can't imagine Symonds not getting picked tla, if he kept on getting reselected when doing sfa, then how much more so when he scored 156 two innings ago. I'm not saying it's right obviously (although I'm rather indifferent to him being there) but that's just the way it is. I'd be suprised if he wasn't selected.

On the issue of Watson opening.. It is a very different ball game opening in tests compared to ODI's. It is very difficult to make that switch.

Watson talks about opportunity in his statements but he is looking short term. I remember Laxman not getting chances in the Indian middle order and going to open in tests. He failed miserably as an opener and later regretted that he opted to open. Watson is young at 25 and he will get his chance in due course in all likelihood.

Also, India did opt for Laxman as they didn't have quality openers and went for it in desperation. Australia has no such desperation with 2 candidates in Rogers and Jaques slugging it out.

Symonds one innings doesn't make a career, Watson is the more genuine allrounder (though I hate him, especially after that WC game) That team should play IMO

No Stuart Clark? Gilchrist gone already?

No Hussey?

EDIT: Didn't see him below Watson. Haha no Gilly or Clark either, can't wait to see that side play against Sri Lanka in the first Test.

Damn it I knew a bowler was missing. I assumed that in the near future Gilchrist will retire. I may be very wrong of course. As for David Hussey, I don't know much about him. Is he a top order batter? If so he's in for Jacques.

He'll retire at the end of the next season imo.

Haha, well he has self-belief, I'll say that. I'm not aware of him opening at any level aside from a few goes at the top in the ODI outfit. Can't see the selectors prefering him to either Jaques or Rogers, especially when they have the option of using Watson's selection to screw over Hodge again...

Yeah, Hodge was pointed out to me by someone else, and it's a fair point. I think that was an odd decision at the time, I don't think they'd go there again. Also, chairman of selectors has changed.

I don't count Gillespie in this though.
You also forgot about Martin Love. Now he has been unlucky to be have been playing in this era. AFAUC, now Watson won't get the openers spot, because of the likes of Rogers, Jaques and if need be, Hussey (I'm not saying he isn't good enough to bat there, but IMO he would be 3rd cab of the rank). Although if he did and it is an ambitious move, he would have to give up bowling and be a specialist batsman (and the question is he good enough to bat in the Australian Test team as a specialist batsman alone).

Watson should bat at 6, with Rogers and Jacques competing for the opening spot. Simple really.

In reality though, I think Hussey opening with Symonds and Watson both in the middle is more likely at the moment.
