An ounce of luck here, reversal of fortune there, and games, series and careers can change completely.

Katich copped one or two in 05 at pretty crucial times and hasn't been heard from since. Hussey was given not out lbw to Monty out here in one of the tests last summer and went on to get a big one.

Strauss out here was a good example as well. Was in good form going into the 1st test - a couple of loose shots compounded by umpiring errors, next thing his place is questioned, the demons get into the head and runs become hard to come by.

That Ikin incident at the Gabba in 46-47 is another good one. Bradman coming back, looking rubbish, given not out to a contentious bump ball call, goes on to make a ton and the rest, as they say......

How is Hodge much better than Symonds? Their careers are almost identical. Hodge was a classic case of average 60 one season and 25 the next, much like Symonds. It hasn't been until the last few years that both have been able to be consistent batsmen at the Pura Cup level.

I have followed this thread with some interest and find some fascinating arguments both for and against.Hodge's biggest danger is being the perennial stand by similar to poor old Andy Bichel.Always the "next" player chosen when something happens to the first eleven. He is a talented cricketer who in another era would be a walk up starter in the side BUT is not a specialist opener so the selectors will not select him there.There are too many good openers available to select from. In my humble opinion, Jaques will get the first nod and will be given at least 2 Tests to prove himself.

Doesn't make him automatically a better batsman. Some of the batsmen around the world with some great techniques just can't make it, like a Ganga for instance. Whereas players with very ordinary techniques such as Gilchrist and Trescothick are very good batsmen.

Give me a player with natural talent over a player with a good technique anyday.

I think you'll find players like Kallis, Dravid and Yousuf & Cook have a combination of both, natural talent and good technique, but I'm 100% sure that they all had natural talent before the technique.

And that, for me, is the biggest reason why bad Umpiring calls need to be eliminated to the maximum extent possible.
