Where to for NZ cricket in the next few years?

Firstly, I apologise if this has been dealt with elsewhere.

Coach: I'd like to see Bracewell go. No-one will be surprised by that.

Test Team

Openers: Papps & Cumming (How & Ingram as options). Select only specialists.
Top order: Fleming, Fulton, & Sinclair (Styris, Vincent, Taylor & Broom as options)
Middle Order: Oram, McCullum, & Franklin (Hopkins & Adams as options)
Tail: Vettori, Bond, & Martin (Gillespie, Scott, & Patel as options)

ODI Team

Openers: Fulton & Vincent (Papps, Cumming, & Ingram as options).
Top order: Fleming, Styris, & Taylor (Broom, H Marshall, & McMillan as options)
Middle Order: Oram, McCullum, & Franklin (McGlashan & Adams as options)
Tail: Vettori, Bond, & Gillespie (Martin, Mason, & Patel as options)

Thoughts?

Definitely a good base to build on. I'd like to see my teacher Peter Ingram get a go so we give other New Plymouth 1st 11's a chance bowling (he opened the batting for our school team less than a year ago). And also we don't have to put up with him anymore:laugh:   Then again it's impossible to make his subject interesting.

Back on topic.

Test team

Michael Papps
Peter Ingram
Stephen Fleming
Peter Fulton
Scott Styris
Jacob Oram
Brendan McCullum
James Franklin
Daniel Vettori
Shane Bond
James McMillan

I don't know much about McMillan except I listened to him bowling a few times on the radio and he was definitely impressive. It's not as though most of our seamers have really nailed thier spots either. The door is wide open. I couldn't find room for Vincent or Sinclair and i am a huge fan of both. I think the others atm a simply better. Though if one of those middle order fails thier call ups could easily be arranged.

ODI team

Vincent
Ryder (heard he has talent but a bad attitude. The senoir players won't take any crap however and he will come right)
Taylor
Fulton
Styris
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Mills
Bond
Patel

Patel is hugely versatile and really we should play our best five ODI bowlers, which is that lot. Fleming is left out because of poor form in comparison to others and he is unwinding from ODI's. He pushed for Taylors spot though.

I like your selections though. We have alot of batting depth but very little bowling depth. That is our problem.

Oh yes, I forgot about Mills; I'd have him starting ahead of Gillespie in the ODI team.

I'd not have Styris as a first choice batsman in tests, as his form in test has been ordinary in recent years.

Unfortunately, Jimmy McMillan can't seem to get through a season without picking up at least two injuries. It's a real shame, as he's fast, accurate and can extract movement from most pitches.

Franklin bowling has really gone downhill since that 2005 home series vs Australia. He has lost his ability to swing the ball (even when conditions are conductive for swing bowling) & is pretty much a easy hit for batsmen. I wouldn't have him as a starter in either the test or ODI teams.

Franklin is a good test bowler and it's not like we have an embarrassment of riches. He's a shoe-in for the test team imo

How many tests have NZ actually played since that? I think he's had fairly good returns in them anyway. Franklin as one day bowler is rubbish, but Franklin as a test bowler should be the second fast bowler on the sheet after Bond.

Franklin has always been a completely ordinary performer and he certainly has not 'lost his ability to swing the ball' because he did it even in this world cup. As i predicted all the way back in 2004, Franklin simply isnt a good enough test cricketer to be playing for most sides in the world especially when the ball isnt swinging.

Harsh. A test bowling ave of 28.19 is perfectly acceptable for an NZ bowler and his batting is more than useful... good enough to be batting as high as 6, sooner rather than later

You don't think Taylor would be worth a go in Tests ahead of a Sinclair or Styris?
It's difficult to say because NZ hasn't played many tests in the last few years. However, Sinclair was in the test team and Tayllor has an ordinary FC record; he needs to improve before test selection. And Taylor wa rubbish in the WC, so you can't base his selection on ODI form.

Styris also needs some FC form before being selected for the test team.

People should stop implying that a player's form in ODIs warants test selection; they're two similar but different games. Bracewell has been using this strategy in the last three years and we have crashed from 2nd to 6th in the test rankings!

Styris will be one of the 1st names the test selectors write down...and rightly so

Hay should definitely be looked at as a batting option.
Yeah go Greg Hay

I am not biased towards CD of course:)

In this 20/20 WC thing I think we should send some rookies or near rookies to give them experience. What do you guys think?

I think we should go with the best possible team to win it regardless of experience. There might be some young guys like Dave Houpapa who could get a go.

I was more meaning using it as a breeding ground for our young talent, kinda like rugby sevens. Send a couple of experienced guys over to guide them though. Maybe a team like:

Ryder
How
Gaffeny
Fleming (c)
Hay
Houpapa
Hopkins (w)
N McCullum
J McMillan
Harvie
Bond (vc)

Fleming and Bond to guide the young guns through.

Alternatively, if we wanna go all out to win it with our best team on the park, a few change ups could be made as 20/20 is different to test and ODI's obviously.

Vincent
McCullum
Taylor
Fulton
Styris
McMillan
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Patel
Bond

Vincent and McCullum could be a formidable opening partnership. Both can hit the ball out of the park and both are very quick between the wickets which may prove fustrating for the opposition. Taylor obviously is well suited to 20/20 and Fulton and Styrs provide a solid middle order if the top don't fire. Macka and Oram batting together would provide nightmares for the opposition. Bond and Mills are our two best seamers and and Mills especially is very economical. Patel is outstanding at strangling and getting wickets, likewise Vettori. Vettori will get good high pressure training which will be good for the ODI WC in four years time.

That was pretty uncalled for.

It interests me that you seem so sure on this, what do you know exactly of our up and coming talent? And why are we going to go down exactly?

BTW unless your team is australia, I wouldn't be so ****y. In fact if I were australian I wouldn't be ****y. Other teams are on the rise.
