Really only gets big wickets because he bowls so many overs, and eventually he has to take wickets. Obviously he's reasonably economical, and thus IMO justifies his inclusion in the side, but he's not a particularly threatening Test bowler IMO.
Taking wickets against a team as good at playing spin as Sri Lanka in New Zealand is no easy feat.

He basically mopped up the tail, and the top order wickets that he did get were through some incredibly poor shots. Chamara Silva especially seemed intent on throwing his wicket away to Vettori whilst sweeping on every occasion he got.
