The BCCI are set to meet at the end of next week to discuss India's disastrous World Cup campaign as well as the tenures of the captain, Rahul Dravid, and the coach, Greg Chappell. While Sandeep Patil has been rumored as the next coach, possibly on an interim basis, the captaincy stakes remain wide open. Take your pick.

I would say get kaif in the team and build him up to lead india...he already got the experience as captain of india in u19 and i would have yuvraj as vc

You can't have a "specialist captain", so until Mohammad Kaif can nail down a regular spot then I don't think he should even be considered by the BCCI. Personally I find it quite perplexing that so much has been made out of Dravid's captaincy when India are losing, but previously when India had been winning I don't think too many people had even mentioned about his poor body language in the field and lack of tactical ideas. I feel it would be a big mistake to go back to Sourav Ganguly, he isn't really a long term option and although he was good in the past I think politics would all but rule him out of the job. I don't feel very qualified to comment on Sachin Tendulkar's captaincy potential, but I don't really think he will last too much longer in international cricket so he also would be a stop-gap measure.

Yuvraj Singh is an interesting choice, while he has secured his spot in the ODI side I don't think that until Tendulkar/Dravid/Ganguly/Laxman retire he will be able to nail down his position in the test team. Until that does, I'm not sure whether it would be wise for him to be the ODI captain. In saying that, I definately do think that he has a future as India's captain. Just not yet, let Dravid continue with Yuvraj as his VC. in ODI's.

Unless you have a superb captain (ie Vaughan), his body language, tactics and leadership will primarily be discussed only in pressure situations when the team is struggling. Dravid is not a terrible captain but he is just above average at best and that isn't good enough when the standard of fitness, work ethic and motivation isn't very high in the team (ie India).

In my opinion, Dravid should definitely continue as the captain of the test side. The selectors should consider Yuvraj for the ODI captaincy and just that. Even then, it may be better to keep Dravid as captain for a few months. Draft Kaif into the one-day side and make a decision on Kaif or Yuvraj if the opportunity presents itself in a few months.

i never like dravid as captain because of the way he got his captancy- taking it from ganguly:)> but dravid should stay untill kaif is has a parmanat spot in the team..ganguly doesn't even want the job anymore and tendulkar was captain for a while back in azharuddin's days but didn't do a good job...

We can all post our opinions on this thread to who should be the next Indian captain, but no matter what we think Sachin Tendulkar would be the next Indian captain because he wants to give it a shot for a 3rd time (as captain) and thats the reason why he was made the vice-captain earlier.

When Sachin is interested to captain the side then i can't see many selectors even denying his wish either.

If we do want to move on from the older brigade , Dravid, Sachin and Saurav. It may not be such a bad idea to have Sehwag as the captain. He has a good head for the game. His recent form has been a concern but he seems to be coming out of it and it might actually have a salutory effect on his batting.

He is neither old nor raw. He has tons of experience. Great record as player except recently in the shorter version of the game. Its not likely to happen but I find the idea quite interesting.

Sehwag is too inconsistent in the shorter version and a flat track bully in the longer version. While he has a good cricketing brain, he's not the man to lead a consistent, athletic side.

Sehwag as captain you got be kidding!! Does he even deserve a place in the side atm.

Anyways captaining the Indian side is one of the most thankless jobs in the world, so the next captain should be man who can take criticism and praise equally well and more importantly keep cool in most circumstances.

Seriously though, I'd stick with Dravid at least in the short term.

Got to stick with Dravid. He's not, despite what people may be saying now, a terrible captain, and I doubt there's a better candidate as captain for the team going forward.

I feel sorry for our team if a guy like Singh (and Kaif), who are not even test quality batsmen, get the captaincy.

The future? No way.

Plus, I don't get all this Dravid-bashing all of a sudden. Did we not just win in SA for the first time in our history? Or win a series in the carribean for the first time in 35 years?

Yea, so he had a bad 50 overs against Bangladesh. Big deal. In any case, the problems that plague Indian cricket, most of which have been written about in other threads, will not go away with the change in captaincy/coach. Something much more fundamental has to change. It's like taking tylenol for a brain tumor.

Exactly right mate, it is a knee jerk reaction though and these things happen in spots all the time. If a team doesn't perform, then the captain and coach are the first to feel it. It may not be right, but it happens more often than not.

It's because one-day Cricket is much, much more important than Test Cricket SS
