    "It's only a game"

    http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/c...ry/286676.html

It's something I've been saying for a bit. It's very unhealthy that sponsors make and lose money based on just how one team is performing. Everything shouldn't ride on India doing well, because as Sambit Bal mentions, you can't sustain it over the long run. How much money will the sponsors lose if India go out of the 1st round?

Hmm, there's a certain irony in you posting that heading, considering that you're so outspoken on doing anything possible to win a game of cricket.

To the topic at hand. Financially, this WC could end up being a financial disaster if India get knocked out quickly, in addition to the crowds (which, at least for the group games, I'm sure that they would be struggling to break even on, both for the islands [with the infrastructure built for the WC] and the ICC).

Well, yes you should do anything to win a game of cricket. I hope that doesn't imply that I condone illegal activities though.

Well-written article. Wonder when the worm will start to turn in India if fans continue to be manipulated and exploited to the extent that sometimes seems to go on. I've noticed complaints previously about how pervasive the advertisements are becoming during cricket broadcasts over there - that kind of thing, combined with the cycle of hype and outrage, must surely start to put people off after a while...

But that's how sponsorship works. It's the endorsement of a product and if that product fails to state good worth, it's a failed product and the endorsement suffers. It's very difficult for a sponsor not to lose money on a failed product. A successful product generally tends to make money.

What you seem to be implying is the exclusive utilization of global sponsors, whereby sponsors promote all teams, rather than individual teams. It can never happen though, given the nature of commercialism and how sponsorship works in general.
Sreesanth said, "Next ball he was beaten and I said, 'is this the King Charles Lara? Who is this impostor, moving around nervously? I should have kept my mouth shut for the next ball - mind you, it was a length ball - Lara just pulled it over the church beyond the boundary! He is a true legend."

I realize that true equality among all teams can never happen. But surely something other than one country deciding the failure or success of a tournament would be better?

It doesn't determine the success or failure of a tournament. It determines the success or failure of an investment for a sponsor. And that's the nature of commercialism - you win some and you lose some. If you invest in a team and the team fails, you lose too.

There's almost no legal way to avoid a loss there.

yeah ok, some games wont have as much crowds as expected but who cares...that had to have happened either now or later...india cant do good all the time...cricket cant be dependant on india, thats the reason they more countries playing and fans backing those countries up...but i'll like the irish crowd though... they might lose money this time but this will only help make it a better tournament next time since there will be more interest in the next wc group stage i think...all in all its bad for the time being and the WI but good for cricket in a way...
