Powerplays

Bigger totals.
Haha, indeed.

I've always wanted to see what a game 50 overs fielding restrictions on a somewhat bowler-friendly pitch would be like. Obviously it'd take the spinners out of the game totally so it couldn't be used on a long-term scale - but I'd like to see it done just once.

They have probably helped with bigger totals but they have made the window for use of a spinner smaller.

Instead of bringing in greater flexibility and tactics, we see the powerplays been used in virtually the same way every game and the spinners reduced to overs 20-44 (usually).

They certainly have no achieved what they were intended to do but the big totals are a decent trade off.

There should be a coin toss to decide whether the batting or fielding side gets to decide when to use the next Powerplay.

We should use a different term too. Powerplay is such a wanky American sounding cliche.

I'll never, ever agree with a Powerplay not chosen by the fielding side, personally.

I don't, either, think they've made a massive impact on larger totals - used well, they're actually a bigger advantage to the fielding side (relative to the 15-overs-35-overs rule) than the batting.

Sadly, captains have mostly refused to innovate.

But yeah - it has, for obvious reasons, taken spinners more out of the game. Still, only the Lankans have ever really had more than 1 quality spinner at the same time, so it doesn't really disadvantage too many fielding sides.

Yeah, making it chosen by the batting side will be just as boring as by the fielding side.

As noted, it reduces the flexibilty and options for the fielding captain. It's like the "3 out between 15-30 overs" rule that was used in Australia's ODD competition (and still here in Melbourne in our grade competition *sigh*), which really hurts spinners.

Well, unless we just go back to a fixed period of fielding restrictions, what do you propose could be done to make the powerplays interesting?

Refuse to allow them to be taken in the 11th and\or 16th over?

Heck, it's better than allowing the batting side to choose.

What's this rule you speak of?

its ok....its just that the captains aren't being creative enough yet....someone needs to be the martin crowe...but i would like to see a team that takes it on the last ten overs....cause teams get bashed in that period anyway and so if your team can stop/slow down the other team in the middle and get wickets there wont be any bashing any way .. and even if there is, it would just be bit more but subtract more runs in the middle

You're only allowed 2 men outside the circle in the first 15 overs, and then only 3 outside the circle between overs 16 and 30.

Was used in the domestic competition for a while, and thus grade cricket here have used it. Since the domestic cricket got rid of it, though, no change has been made to change it back.
