    Ponting "THE CAPTAIN"

Lot of people say that Ponting as a captain is nothing special, as many believe that anyone can captain the Australian side. But its also a fact that since SA tour of 06, where he missed first 2 games and aussies lost both those games and when he returned we won 2 games in a row (eventually losing in that 434 chase).

Since then whenever Ponting misses a game aussies lose, so is this Ponting the Captain or the batsman the aussies miss?

a bit of both TBH! He is a great batsman...but as we saw in the chappel-hadlee series....the aussies are not short of batsmen who can make runs...a good captain is very important as well. I think they missed his presence on the field...to make those really important decisions that can change a game.

Lately, when the aussies have played india....the aussies usually get a sound total that can be beaten...but ponting's captaincy always turns things around for the aussies and the bowlers also seem to undersdtand what he is trying to tell them. A good relationship exists between the bowlers and ponting...leading to a good australian attack!

But then you could always argue with the best aussie batting line-up aussies could have managed to score a lot more runs then they did in the C-H trophy.

Yeah i know it sounds funny but its a fact, in both 2nd and 3rd games of C-H trophy aussies gained momentum in the last 12 to 10 overs, otherwise with the likes of Gilly, Punter, Pup or Symo who knows they might have made scores around 400 or even in excess of it.

To completly ridicule Ponting's achievements as a captain just because he is leading a great team is not fair.

He has made a lot of bad decisions as a captain, and he is no natural leader of a pack but then he is doing something down the line which others are haven't been able to do as the captain of the Australian team.

He strikes me as being fairly formulaic as captain.

Ponting as a captain has long been over-patronised.

He has his poor games (the 438 game) but for the most part criticism aimed his way, especially from British journalists, tends towards the ridiculous and my only assumption can be that it's as an outlet for perceived hammerings on the end of Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Stephen Waugh.

Those comparing Waugh favourably with Ponting over here have no clue, frankly.

I think as a one-day skipper, it's a case of "absence makes the heart grow fonder." With Hussey at the helm, (admittedly with key players missing) Australia aren't half the side as when Ponting is in charge. I realise that Gilly is VC, but can't, OTTOMH, think of any recent games where he has actually led.

I've perhaps been over-critical of Ponting in the past. I maintain that he has made some bad decisions, nonetheless, he is over-criticised because he leads such a good side. it would be interesting to see him lead another side. Shame it'll never happen. Well, unless the ICC ever organise another "super" Test when England are World #1

I think Ponting is underrated as a captain. I'd hate to be thought of as a fanboy as I think he is a childish ****, but I think he has a much better cricket brain than he is given credit for.

no, he has a decent cricket brain but not one good enough to be a really good captain.

That is just my opinion of course. And I think he backs men he believes in a little too much, sort of like Ganguly in that respect. And tbh to him, those guys have delivered. Esp. Symonds, he paid his trust back big time. But generally, he shows some favoritism, for me.
We miss you, Fardin. :(. RIP.

    Well what'd'ya expect?

I've made it clear that I think there are plenty of cricket journos out there who don't really have a clue, and that I know better than them.

And TBF, I'm certainly not the only one.

But you're an Aussie - I'm talking about Brits, whose reasoning is normally nothing more than "Waugh led a team that thrashed us, we beat a team captained by Ponting".

There are some sound reasons why Waugh was a better captain than Ponting, but only some, and there are also reasons to the contrary.

Certain Aussies are rather better at assessing such things than the British Press Pack at large.
