As professional athletes, not having everything checked by a form of team doctor means that they leave themselves susceptible to anything.

So the team doc should test every meal and every glass of water they ingest, then?
They were actively taking supplements that were given to them by a doctor who wasn't involved within the team.

It's stretching it very far to say that general food and drink will contain quantities enough of substances that appear on the banned list to give player an advantage / have them pinged for drug use.

I know, I was slightly exaggerating, but you get the point - if you get paranoid about contamination it's very, very hard to control it and it'll soon get out of hand, if not neccessarily to the level of all food\drink being checked.

The only way to deal with such problems is to take the chemical companies manufacturing such supplements to task.
