Rest of World XI

Kallis opening??
Strange move indeed but he has the technique to cope with it so why not? Better than opting for Strauss, Smith, Gayle or Fleming IMO.
The way I see it, these are world-class batsmen and they should be more than capable of moving up or down the batting order provided the technique is there.

Excuse me, this thread is purely imaginative. Come up with a better reason, seriously.
Kallis is never going to be an opening batsmen so there's no point putting him in that position in your ROW X1.That's all I'm saying. What about Strauss or Graeme Smith at the top or even Wasim Jaffer:D

There is a definate lack of quality opening batsmen in World cricket at the moment. However, its still a relatively specialist position and Id be loathed to put someone there that doesnt usually bat there just to fit them in.

Asif has only played 9 tests. Im not going to put someone in a World XI after they have played so few games

KP could drop out for Younis Khan, Pollock, or a 2nd spinner depending on conditions.

He's more reliable these days than some of the other names in your side ... unless we're supposed to assume that this is an ideal scenario. In that case, I'd consider Shoaib.

:-O You do know Asif's record? During the period of his 9 tests he has missed 15 games. He has had injuries and has a drugs charge hanging over his head. Not exactly the definition of reliable.

Bond out for Shoaib in may be a logical call as Bond hardly has a massive body of Test work (though he is an experienced international player) but I get the feeling that Shoaib is a cancer in the dressing room and throw in the drugs charge and his own injury woes and there is no way Id reward him with a berth in a World XI.

That's why I found it ironic that you singled out Asif while including Trescothick, who hasn't played in ages for various unknown reasons, and Bond, who is more likely to break a bone than take a wicket despite his immense talent. Right now, I would take Asif over Bond 9 times out of 10.

Agreed. Realistically, I would exclude both Bond and Akhtar despite their abilities simply because of the crap that comes attached with them (injuries, attitude, drugs?).

On current rankings:

1. Y Khan
2. R Dravid*
3. M Yousuf
4. K Pietersen
5. B Lara
6. J Kallis
7. K Sangakkara+
8. S Pollock
9. A Kumble
10. M Ntini
11. M Muralitharan

On overall career:

1. M Trescothick
2. G Smith
3. S Tendulkar
4. R Dravid*
5. B Lara
6. J Kallis
7. K Sangakkara+
8. S Pollock
9. C Vaas
10. A Kumble
11. M Muralitharan

12th. M Ntini
Lack of an out and out speed demon there. Bond has been dogged by injury, Shoaib is...Shoaib, though Ntini's record has come good in recent years.

Vaas provides good mix up being a left hander. Two spinners is covered by Kallis being able to send a few down, and Pollocks batting is a bonus (as is Vaas's).

The opening position was actually the toughest to pick. Nearly went Gibbs.

Agreed that opening is a specialist position, but there is not a single world class opener outside Australia in world cricket today. With that much crap opening the batting, I'd very much consider Kallis or Dravid as an opener. The question is can Kallis do a better job opening than Strauss or Trescothic? I think he can. And secondly, is there another middle order guy who can step up and do a decent job in the middle order? The answer is yes.

So my 'revised' line up is:

  1. Cook
  2. Kallis
  3. Dravid
  4. Yousuf
  5. Pieterson
  6. Lara
  7. Sangakarra
  8. Flintoff
  9. Ntini
  10. Asif
  11. Muralitharan

And yes, I put Cook in there because I am biased and I love him.

The lack of Vaughan in anyone's team except mine is a bit of a surprise IMO.

* He's a successful test opener - the position most people are struggling to fill in their lineups.
* His captaincy is superb and he managed to successfully lead a team to a series victory against Australia.
* SS said the game was to be played in Australia - Vaughan's record in Australia is absolutely brilliant. He clearly likes the true and exaggerated bounce.

His injury concerns would be the only reason I could see people leaving him out - but yet some people have selected Trescothick...
