Why did england lose The Ashes.
For me it was to much confidence and Ashley Giles.
Thoughts?.

Too much confidence? Most of the time they looked like they didn't have enough confidence to back themselves and actually attack Australia, they didn't beleive in themselves even though the majority of the team were able to outplay Australia in 2005. This time around they didn't back themselves, made some poor selection issues, didn't have a good enough captain and weren't as good as Australia.

Australia was determined to win this time. Ponting set the tone for the series with his century at the Gabba and Australia just improved from there. England had Australia in trouble a couple of times but they always seemed to fight back where as England crumbled under any sort of pressure. England probably should have had an extra batter in the line up and Panesar should have definately been in the team from the start.

Australia were probably pretty determined last time too though.

We only just lost last series because of a few rare occurances, like Warne dropping Piertesen in slips.

This series England just didn't have the crazy luck they had last time, they were underprepared and very inexperienced especially on australian pitches.

i think england could have won the ashes with this team they had, but definetely witht the squad! They had numerous chances to get the upper hand in almost all of the tests and they didnt take them. For me Fletcher was rite to pick the original test team that won the ashes last time in the 1st test but he should defintetely have brough in panesar earlier and dalrymple should have played in the last test!!!!

This ashes was won by a better team,
the last ashes was won/lost by 2 runs (Kaspa getting caught by Jones)

Yes and the better team got those two runs. England were definitely the better team in the 2005 series. Obviously not by the same distance as the Australians in the last series, but they were still the better team.

2) England are not #2
3) Sitting out Monty for the first two test
4) They just sucked

What have Pakistan done to take the mantle of number 2 from England? Beat the West Indies at home? 8-)

Rankings must be earned. They're not granted on potential.
So England clearly don't deserve number two by going 0-5 in a series where not even a single match was even close.

But England earned their #2 by beating the best side in the world and having consistent performance for two years prior to that.

Pakistan has not. Someone has to step up and take the spot, and no one has. England still #2.

Defeat away to Pakistan is balanced by victory at home to Pakistan, therefore our victory over the crims at home means we can still be regarded #2, IMO, until Pakistan do something more noteworthy.

There is no clear-cut number two. England beat Pakistan at home but lost to them away.

Number Two: (Sri Lanka, India, South Africa, England, Pakistan)
