Substitutes?

This was posted in the 1st Ashes Test thread, but I think it's something worth discussing separately so have cut it out and added my response.

the Jones injury again raises the question re the role of the 12th man & substitutes - why should a batsman be allowed a runner whereas a substitute can not be used for an injury to a bowler (which has a greater effect on the team)???? The 'match' as a competition was effectively over from this point onwards!!!!
Definitely not in my opinion - the sub is just fielding for the player as he cannot field himself - and even that is frequently abused (think ODI, and lumbering old fat man is suddenly injured when it comes to fielding, bringing in young whippesnapper)

The runner is one of the 11 already named, and needs the oppositon captain's agreement to be utilised.

The batsman himself isn't actually replaced fully.

When one bowler goes down, there's still others who can do it - if you don't select enough, bad selection.

Agreed there. The privelege has been abused all too many times.

whippersnapper ? lol are you referring to someone here ?

I didn't want to name names without researching a little, but I seem to remember Inzamam having a few "injuries" over the years!

Thats what i had in mind, Pakistan have used it, well, unnecessarily. The favourite substitute is Imran nazir. I just dont think thats fair. Saeed Anwar too as had that problem throughout his career.

Well Warney can get that way if he doesn't watch the pies.. ;)

Back On Topic, No substitutes - it just gets abused too much.

hell I must be showing my age - I thought he was referring to Runatunga!!!!!

:lol::lol::lol:

as the originator of the comment I am pleased to see that you have grasped the point that the current practise re 'runners' has become farcical, particularly because the batsman is not replaced!!!!!!! he may be restricted in movement (running) but as a specialist he can still play his strokes and contribute.

the common selection theology (India excluded) appears to be 6 specialist batsmen, 4 specialist bowlers & a specialist 'keeper. If a bowler is injured he can no longer contribute with either ball or bat.....

how about if we did away with the current practise & imposed one whereby if either batsman or bowler was injured then the 12th man replaced them period.....

if anyplayer is injured at anytime they are replaced by the 12th man - either batting or bowling.....does away with the current shenanigans particularly in ODI - and may keep a test match a more even 11 V 11 contest......

teams would have to rethink their selection strategy re the 12th man and we would probably see more 'all rounder's being used, as well as less injuries to batsmen in ODI's....

:D

Come on man show the great batsman some respect, what if he is not the greatest runner but he still covers up for it by hitting some powerful boundaries. 8D

IMO this wouldn't be a good thing... teams full of all-rounders just don't have the same quality as teams with specialists. (Works on ICC though..)

I was only referring to the selection of the 12th man as being an all rounder as an each way bet for any required substitution......

I too would hate to see a test 11 full of all rounders and would hope they would have more brains than to take that path.....

The guys who started the substitute fielder routine was the mighty West Indian sides of the 80s. They'd send one of their lumbering fast bowlers off once he'd finish his spell and bring on Roger Harper or Gus Logie who were outstanding fielders.
