Eyes not spreadsheets
This was posted in the 1st Ashes Test thread, but I think it's something worth discussing separately so have cut it out and added my response.
The runner is one of the 11 already named, and needs the oppositon captain's agreement to be utilised.
The batsman himself isn't actually replaced fully.
When one bowler goes down, there's still others who can do it - if you don't select enough, bad selection.
Definitely not in my opinion - the sub is just fielding for the player as he cannot field himself - and even that is frequently abused (think ODI, and lumbering old fat man is suddenly injured when it comes to fielding, bringing in young whippesnapper)the Jones injury again raises the question re the role of the 12th man & substitutes - why should a batsman be allowed a runner whereas a substitute can not be used for an injury to a bowler (which has a greater effect on the team)???? The 'match' as a competition was effectively over from this point onwards!!!!
