All time spinner ratings (rankings by Silentstriker) - NEW METHOD

The Wheel is Forever
Hello,

I decided to use a new (and perhaps better) method for this ranking.

First, it minimizes the impact of minnows (we don't count records when touring ZImbabwe or Bangladesh). Secondly, it introduces a new factor - consistency. And third, it does not give your home country undue weight. For example, we know that some countries have home pitches that hate spin bowling, while others are conducive to it. So each of the eight countries are given 1/8 the weight.

Greatest Spinners of All Time

  1. Warne (91.91)
  2. Muralitharan (91.13)
  3. Underwood (87.8)
  4. Grimett (87.192)
  5. Laker (84.085)
  6. Mushtaq Ahmed (82.23)
  7. Chandrashekhar (79.226)
  8. Saqlain Mushtaq (78.150)
  9. Verity (75.179)
  10. Kumble (73.852)
  11. Bedi (73.119)
  12. Rhodes (72.328)
  13. Harbhajan (64.674)
  14. Giles (63.814)
  15. Qadir (63.502)
  16. Vetorri (61.511)
  17. Dave Mohammed (52.600)

So the formula consists of:

avg. in Aus: 3.75%
avg. in Ind: 3.75%
avg. in Eng: 3.75%
avg. in SA: 3.75%
avg. in WI: 3.75%
avg. in NZ: 3.75%
avg. in SL: 3.75%
avg. in PAK: 3.75%
SR. in Aus: 3.75%
SR. in Ind: 3.75%
SR. in Eng: 3.75%
SR. in SA: 3.75%
SR. in WI: 3.75%
SR. in NZ: 3.75%
SR. in SL: 3.75%
SR. in PAK: 3.75%

Consistency in averages: 5%
Consistency in strike rate: 5%
ICC Rating: 30%

Consistency is measured by taking the standard deviation of all the averages of that bowler (lower standard deviation is better). For a bowler (like Laker) who has not toured all the countries, their away averages and strike rates are averaged out, and used for the rest of the countries.

This takes a LOT of work, and please understand if I can't get your favorite spinner in there ASAP (though I'll do my best to get them in there). Just give me the name of the bowler, and I'll add them as soon as I can. I'd like to get to 20 bowlers.

Thoughts, Ideas? I only started with four, and I'll add more bowlers as you suggest them.

There was an error in my standard deviation formula (it wasn't adding them), its fixed now.

100 is ideal bowler, though its possible to go above it. I use 55 S/R and 25 ave. as base for the spinners (compared to 20 ave and 50 S/R), thats why the corresponding numbers are higher.

And not that this has to be said, but the numbers between this list and the other list are not comparable. The formula and weight system is completely different. Using this criteria, several of the pace bowlers would score >100.

I'd be interested to see how the 3 great Pak spinners rank. Qadir, Mushi, and Saqi. Thanks!

Let me do one, then I have to take a break for lunch, then I'll do the others.

I seriously want to see where Bhaji stands here. Also looking foward on seeing Bedi.

Thanks man. Can you start with Qadir?
Sorry, wrong one. I'll get him next.

EDIT: Added him. He suffers greatly by doing well in only 1/8 countries.

His figures are 0/355 in Pakistan. He doesn't have an average there...so what do I put in? I guess I'll just put in the worst figures of any of his other countries (Australia).

Mushtaq Ahmed jumps to #4 on back of some very consistently good performances away from home, as well as his relatively high ICC rating of 827.

He does better away from home, and since Pakistan is counted as just another country (1 out of 8), his away performances override his home ones.

It's obviously flawed if Tadpole doesn't even get in the top 4.
Post ignored because stuck up american doesn't want to admit he's wrong, imo...

Ugh, are you really going to make me go through Dave's stats? Fine.

EDIT: Only five tests? Can't create a ranking based on that.

Give him a break. There is nothing wrong with us Americans.
