It's because Australia is on the other side of the Planet. If they waited until next Winter it would only be 15 months before the Series in England in 2009, one way or the other they have to be closer together than the ideal two years.

All true but the last Ashes in England started later than normal because of the Bangla series and finished later. This now means the gap is a little shorter than normal.
