Battle of the Australians

Yeah, McGrath really.

One of the advantages of living in a televisual age where everything is recorded in glorious technicolor by at least a dozen different cameras is that 50/100 years from now cricket fans will actually be able to see how good the big fella was. It's rather a pity that we, as cricket fans, are denied to see (say) Sydney Barnes in full flow.

It's a shame how little coverage Stan McCabe really got. Some people (including Bradman), actually said that he was one of the most talented batsmen of all time, and just lacked concentration to be considered alongside some of the greats of the game. I understand why people consider him to be beneath McGrath as far as this vote goes, but I'm sure that McCabe would have got more votes, had people realised just quite how good he really was.

What if he retires tommorow?
The fact of the matter is that Ponting's record pretty clearly beats Benaud's, both as a player and as a captain. Being retired/popular or not doesn't change that.
