I'll go Lawry myself. I suspect, rather like Boycott & Barrington and to a lesser extent the later period SR Waugh, he was a rather better batter than his low-risk approach allowed himself to be.

As batsmen they are probably of a similar standard but my vote goes to Simpson for the reasons SJS stated.
