Corey Richards...what could have been?

Mister Wright

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Corey Richards announced his retirement today (actually yesterday).

I used to think this guy was a wonderful batsman and really thought he would go all the way, but like so many of the lost generation was stuck behind a very successful test team. I think it is a shame he didn't make it because he was a real talent. I can still remember the day he and Blewett chased down close to 400 in two sessions in a tour game against England.

Even though he was a blue, he was one of my favourite players.

I once played a country challenge game with Corey Richards, top bloke. Just thought I'd throw that in.

God, 31 seems well early to call it quits. I'm a little surprised he hasn't played county stuff over here.

Played for Scotland in the 99 NWT and this summers C&G. That not count as "county stuff"?

He was hardly scoring enough runs to go all the way anyway.

He had 2 really good seasons in the 90's which included his 130 odd for australia A gainst england,i remember he was even included in a guide to australias' potential players for the ashes,i think it was a ken piesse cricket publication.
Then he lost his 4 day form then his one day form never recovered, averaged 30 last year in the ING cup very decent average and did well for scotland.
I think the blues selectors looking to the future now seems like we got a youth policy especially with mathew phelps retiring too.
Expect some players from the world youth cup too emerage either that or the selectors will hang on players like cowan, packman or creed.
Anyway a useful career and good he went on a high with the INg cup victory, shame he never recovered that form he had in the 90's tho.

It would be interesting to see if he turns out for scotland again,he has played 2/3 seasons there.
Ian bevan a tassie batsmen who bowled a bit retired in the 90's moved to scotland and played over 40 games for scotland as their spinner,so the precedent is there.
