# 4 for 1986-2006 (Preliminary Vote)

The 1986-2006 World XI so far:

1. Matthew Hayden (LHB): 84 tests, 7326 runs @ 53.08, 26 centuries, 26 fifties
2. Saeed Anwar (LHB): 55 tests, 4052 runs @ 45.52, 11 centuries, 25 fifties
3. Ricky Ponting (RHB): 105 tests, 8792 runs @ 58.22, 31 centuries, 34 fifties

This is now a 4-day “preliminary” voting round to identify the top 4 players who will then go into a 3-day “selection” vote for the # 4 position (the 3 runner-ups will be allowed into the preliminary vote for the # 5 batting position).

First, the 3 runner-ups from the # 3 Poll

Rahul Dravid (RHB): 104 tests, 9048 runs @ 58.75 (23/46) ---- [at # 3 6818 @ 61.42] [at # 4, 901 @ 60.06]
Younis Khan (RHB): 47 tests, 3884 runs @ 49.16 (12/15) ---- [at # 3, 2825 @ 51.36]
Brian Lara (LHB): 128 tests, 11505 runs @ 52.05 (32/47) ---- [at # 3, 3484 @ 59.05] [at # 4, 7352 @ 50.70]

Then, the following are the nominees for the best # 4 during the period 1986-2006:

Allan Border (LHB): 79 tests, 5340 runs @ 49.44 (11/33) --- [at # 4, 2588 @ 53.91]
Martin Crowe (RHB): 51 tests, 4022 runs @ 50.91 (14/13) --- [3640 @ 52.75]
Daryll Cullinan (RHB): 70 tests, 4554 runs @ 44.21 (14/20) --- [4060 @ 46.13]
Aravinda De Silva (RHB): 86 tests, 5924 runs @ 43.55 (18/21) --- [4543 @ 44.10]
Mahela Jayawardene (RHB): 83 tests, 6250 @ 49.60 (16/29) --- [4441 @ 54.15]
Jacques Kallis (RHB): 102 tests, 8033 runs @ 55.78 (24/40) --- [4437 @ 70.42]
Damien Martyn (RHB): 65 tests, 4361 runs @ 47.40 (13/23) --- [2595 @ 47.18]
Javed Miandad (RHB): 53 tests, 3482 runs @ 47.05 (9/15) --- [3234 @ 51.33]
Sachin Tendulkar (RHB): 132 tests, 10469 runs @ 55.39 (35/41) --- [8524 @ 57.20]
Dilip Vengsarkar (RHB): 35 tests, 2280 runs @ 53.02 (8/10) --- [1977 @ 54.91]
Mark Waugh (RHB): 128 tests, 8029 runs @ 41.81 (20/47) --- [6662 @ 42.43]
Mohammad Yousuf (RHB): 70 tests, 5737 runs @ 53.12 (19/25) --- [2079 @ 67.06]

So, whats the over/under on the number of votes Martin Crowe and Daryll Cullinan will get?

In any case, its Tendulkar, fairly easily.

So you getting worried now SS, if Tendulker get's # 4, how you going to feel when Waugh gets # 5

btw, I think you're being a bit harsh on Martin Crowe as he averages 50+ in the period and he would have done a lot better if he didn't have dodgy knees

Look, I am not trying to knock any of them. I was just saying that most players (maybe not Crowe) will get zero votes, so I don't see the point. I am not saying they aren't good players, not at all.

In any case, lets leave this behind us...its your poll and you can run it however you want.

As for Waugh getting #5, it would be odd to say the least if Waugh and Ponting make the team but Lara misses out. If Lara makes it, then it would mean Waugh misses out in favor of Ponting. Both these scenarios don't make much sense. Thats why I was adamant that Lara should be #3, because now it means that either Lara or Waugh will miss out...and neither should IMO.

I see your point, however I thought the Lara/Tendulker vote would be a lot closer (I know it's early).

Well, if Lara wins here then it means either Tendulkar or Waugh misses out...and its exactly the same thing.

I've gone with Sachin on the very sound grounds that his only serious competition for #4 is Kallis & I refuse to vote for the king of the red ink.

I don't think the competition is all that serious, I see Kallis as more of an ideal #3, or maybe as #6 when he used to bowl a lot.

TBF to Jacques (as I'm not often prone to be) his figures @ 4 are not unimpressive.

What about Lara at 4 - that's the position I'd always consider him to be best at.
