![]() Imagine one batsmen bats at 8 and averages 20, with say 5 not outs over 100 innings. Another averages 10 batting at 11 and has 25 not outs in 100 innings. The first player would have scored 1900 runs at 19 runs per innings, while the second would have 750 at just 7.5 per innings. In other words, the gap between them in terms of runs scored per innings is more than the gap between their averages. I don't know if it is actually accurate with regard to Giles and Monty, but it does make sense.

Huh? The reason Montys' average is higher is because he gets more not outs. I presume you realize that having not outs greatly boosts your average. Lets say player one scored: 10, 10, 10 in three innings. His average is 10, and he has scored a total of 30 runs. Player two has scored: 10, 0*, 5* in three innings. His average is 15, even though he has scored half the runs as the previous player. So in terms of contribution, player two does not actually score 5 more runs per innings than player one. How does this not make sense? You may doubt its accuracy, as applied to Giles and Panesar, but the argument is perfectly logical. Is there a hidden vendetta against me or something? Not that I mind winning an award, but this is a second week in a row that my Inzamam award winning post made perfect sense.
