Indian domestic season 2006-07

What teams need to do now:

Baroda: Irfan's return should boost them a great deal. His brother, leg-spinner and strike batsman Yusuf, has been dropped due to declining form. The selectors can gamble and get him back, ahead of off-spinner Ajit Bhoite, who's just a stock spinner now. Rajesh Pawar and Rakesh Patel will be in the wickets once more, and should keep up the form. Irfan has one more match, and can use it to good effect to return to form with the ball. As a batsman, he can stick to striking the ball, since the batting order is very strong, with batting all the way down to nine.

Delhi: Batsman Aditya Jain has age on his side, so it's not too late for this part-time off-spinner to bowl full-time. Rajat Bhatia has dropped one catch too many and struggles on the field, but he's been in the runs and often provided support with his medium-pace bowling. They need to improve their fielding and be more judicious in choice of shots.

Haryana: Score more runs! Especially Rana and Sumit Sharma. Joginder needs a cushion above him to play more freely. All along, he's played as a batting lynchpin, and wasn't too good at it. Stock seamer Rana needs to contribute more overs and reduce the load on Joginder and leggie Mishra.

Uttar Pradesh: They should think twice before promoting the aggressive Pravin Kumar in nearly every match. He's not suited to open in most matches. Spinner Murtaza is one who can help the team's cause by supporting leggie Chawla and scoring runs. They have three bowlers– Chawla, Kumar and Murtaza– who can score runs, and wicketkeeper Amir Khan can also score some. They can open with SJ Srivastava and RP Singh, with Kumar coming in first-change. Kumar is raking in so many wickets; he should be in national contention after this season, especially after the World Cup.

Karnataka: It's a tough call to drop one of two left-arm spinners. The over-the-hill Sunil Joshi is still relevant because of his experience, while KP Appana is still developing. They've got one more bowling option in Chandrashekhar Raghu, the offie. Only one of Akhil, Binny and Dhiman should play. Ideally, it should be Dhiman, who can contribute a lot with the ball. You then have a very versatile team with six bowling options, batting till eight and very effective on the field.

Andhra: How did they miss that one? Their performance, as a team, was fabulous in the match against Delhi. Strike bowler Sahabuddin scored heavily, when he was needed most. They do have some versatility with Sahabuddin and Mohammed Faiq the off-spinner, and wicketkeeper MSK Prasad still scores runs. Seamer Kalyankrishna has been moving the ball well, taking wickets at a good average this season. They need more runs in the forthcoming matches.

Bengal: Paul has been out of action for some time now. Middle-order batsman Laxmi Ratan Shukla should support seamers Bose and Dinda regularly. Murtaza Lodhgar has been left out for a good part of this season, although there's no real case for his recall. The second spinner has often been changed, though Lahiri still picks wickets. They're doing fine now, but need to try harder to get into that last four.

Punjab: With Sodhi gone, it's up to seamer Ishan Malhotra and spinner Vipul Sharma to perform all-round duty. Gagandeep and Ablash should open the bowling, with Malhotra to back up. With Rajesh Sharma reported for a suspect action, he may miss the next match, with Harbhajan and Vipul bowling in tandem. Dharmani can continue keeping wickets. Malhotra needs to convert those starts into larger, chunky scores.

Mumbai: This piece comes last as they're in League B, unlike other seasons. This is just to highlight the piece. Zaheer, Agarkar, Powar and Kulkarni will form a match-winning bowling lineup. A place is left open for a seamer, either the value-added Abhishek Nair or Wilkin Mota, or the young scholarship holder Waingankar. Samant has also got into run-scoring form in the last match, so a specialist may be a good choice. With Jaffer back, Mane may have to be benched, and a middle-order of Sharma, Tendulkar and Mazumdar will be very strong. This team will be the one to watch.

Well, look at the performances of Munaf Patel and VRV Singh. While Singh bowled several overs, he didn't take too many wickets, and ended with an average similar to one expected of Irfan. Munaf wasn't even fit enough to bowl in the second innings and took just one wicket. Neither of them deserved a place in the national side, ahead of Harbhajan or a batsman. At least Irfan could have scored some extra runs, or even done alright opening the innings. Even Dinesh Karthik scored a few in the last match!
Your suggestion is to opt for a three-man attack then? Laughable. Your suggestion is that Munaf is rubbish? Beyond laughable. Just a few months ago, you were raving about him. Stick to what you say if you want any credibility. Munaf is still one of our three best seam bowlers and one match where he wasn't even 100% does not change that.

Well, keep him out of the national team until he returns to form. There's not enough time for the World Cup, so he should be back sooner than later. Is there even a replacement? Maybe one of the two all-rounders from Railways, but the people in high places are not too keen on getting them back. Even if he returns to form in the domestic scene, he should be brought back and kept in the team for a long time, because he was a major factor in their best performances when at his best.
Let's stay away from JP Yadav - your version of Andrew Flintoff. Joginder Sharma should be the first name on the list as a replacement for an out-of-form Pathan.

If Yuvraj Singh is one of India's best ODI batsmen, it just sums up the Indians' ODI problems in those years. He averages a wee bit over 30 and sometimes less, and has very few centuries scored. There's nothing to suggest he can match a Tendulkar, Dravid or even Laxman, and it shows up against Test class bowling units.
Good one. Yuvraj is a candidate for ICC one-day batsman of the year and yet he's an embarrassment for India. As bad as our selectors are, I can't imagine the sorry state we would be in if you were at the helm. Step back and take a look at the claims you're making.

I hope TN doesn't get relegated b'coz there are still spots for Balaji, Badri, Kaarthick(When Dhoni comes back), Yo Mahesh, Jesuraj, etc,. as they all have potential

Balaji, Badrinath and Karthik are already under the selectors' radar and will get selected for Duleep Trophy, possibly India A and possibly even the national team without playing in Elite League (not Balaji ...). Yomahesh had a poor season so one year off in Plate League won't hurt his chances. Jesuraj doesn't seem to be much of a prospect despite his record.

Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel are set to miss the Mumbai-Maharashtra clash. Tendulkar and Patel have been advised one and two weeks of rest, respectively, while Zaheer has cited personal reasons. Anil Kumble may also sit out for Karnataka to rest up before the one-day series against the West Indies. Everyone else should be in action during the final round of the Ranji Trophy.

Rajesh Sharma has been reported for chucking again. The BCCI have asked the PCA to remove him from the Punjab side for the final round of the Ranji Trophy.
In addition, he has been sent to the NCA for remedial work under Shivlal Yadav. Impressive stuff from the BCCI for once.

Whatever it takes!!!

Even if he returns to form in the domestic scene, he should be brought back and kept in the team for a long time, because he was a major factor in their best performances when at his best. The bottom line is that they didn't win tournaments. Junior and Gilly did. Gibbs and Kirsten did. Hayden and Gilly do and so do Gilchrist and his current partner. When they've won so few tournaments over the last few years, they're a lot less likely to win tournaments now. Statistics don't transform into tournament victories. Even teams with lesser players like Sri Lanka and New Zealand have defeated the Indians repeatedly in those years. While we all agree Sehwag's form warrants a drop, there's no need to take a backward step as this. There are three in-form openers (Gambhir, Chopra and Robin Uthappa) who are worth a shot in the ODI side now, and fit the bill well.

Tendulkar, given his present style of play, will be more useful in the middle-order, where some stability is needed. He'll surely do better than those ODI specialists picked for India these days.If Yuvraj Singh is one of India's best ODI batsmen, it just sums up the Indians' ODI problems in those years. He averages a wee bit over 30 and sometimes less, and has very few centuries scored. There's nothing to suggest he can match a Tendulkar, Dravid or even Laxman, and it shows up against Test class bowling units.

Let's just forget about the South Africa series. There were way too many selection and planning mistakes for the Indian team to win the series.

Wat is this with u and ur hate of Dinesh Kaarthick? U say EVEN DK scored runs on that track? Did u even watch the match? Did u see how much more comfortable he looked at the crease compared to some of the big guns of our side?

And please, u will be the only one who will suggest that Pathan be picked as a batter who can bowl. And even then, his bowling will still get slapped around and we will lose because of that. We have several batting options at the moment and we should exhaust them all before we even start to think of Irfan as a batting option.

Maybe, but tell me this: How many sixers did he hit?

Three matches to keep an eye on ...

Haryana vs Delhi - Both teams are looking to avoid relegation. Joginder Sharma will lead the Haryana attack while Sehwag and Nehra should bolster Delhi, who may be missing talented seamer Ishant Sharma. Gambhir is another man to watch as the selectors assemble in Rajkot.

Saurashtra vs Karnataka - While this match will feature today's Dravid and perhaps tomorrow's Dravid (Pujara), the main attraction will be Robin Uthappa, who is in line for a call-up if he scores big in front of the selectors.

Tamil Nadu vs Baroda - TN are desperate to avoid relegation and Karthik will return at the perfect time. Meanwhile, Pathan and Badrinath are two men who the selectors would watch very keenly.

Uttar Pradesh vs Andhra Pradesh - One of Haryana, Delhi, TN and UP will definitely face relegation. Raina and Kaif will make a final effort to impress the selectors. Let's hope Piyush Chawla ends his disappointing season in fine fashion.

Stay tuned for all the action just 3 hours from now ...

Wrap of day 1

Haryana v Delhi:

Delhi won the toss and selected to bat first. Gambhir and Akash Chopra open for India, and the opening partnership was decent which went on for 58 runs in 15 overs. Gambhir got out cheaply for 16. Gambhir needs to perform in the second innings because then his position in the national side against West Indies could be reconsidered. Chopra and skipper Sehwag, both set up Delhi in a strong position with Chopra getting his 50, and Sehwag getting a much needed 100. Sehwag could still be in consideration for the home series against WI and SL. Delhi 330-7 at stumps on day 1

Railways vs Himachal Pradesh:

Railways decision to bat first backfired when the opening wicket fell for only 11 runs. TP Singh and S Bangar then provided Railways with a 91 run partnership for the second wicket. However after Bangars wicket fell, the collapse for Railways started and they ended up with 207-9 at stumps. The 25 year old left arm spinner for HP, Vishal Bhatia picked up 5-52 in 26 overs.

Utter Pradesh vs Andhra:

Andhra suffered a tough first inning, getting all out for only 111, after selecting to bat first. Only two batsman got into the 20s (M Sai 22, and MSK Parsad 20). RP Singh led the bowling for UP getting 4-30. 20 year old pacer Praveen Kumar also grabbed 4 Wickets for 47 runs. UP came into bat and got 42 overs in and ending with 155-4 at stumps. Suresh Raina leads the scoring at the moment for UP with a slow, but valuable 50.

Hyderabad vs Punjab:

VVS Laxman won the toss and decided to field first with his Hyderabad side. Apart from RS Ricky, who contributed with 42 runs, the top and middle order for Punjab collapsed 142 all out. Hyderabad also got off to a bad start, being 2 down with just 21 runs on the board. However skipper VVS Laxman stand strong at the crease with a 44 not out and was supported by Arjun Yadav and his 40 runs to help rebuild the innings. Hyderabad 145-4 at stumps

Maharashtra vs Mumbai:

Mumbai batting first got off to a great start with a huge partnership between their opening pair. 21 year old Sahil Kukreja got his first century for Mumbai, and his partner Wasim Jaffer also contributed big time with his 78. Another youngster for Mumbai, Hiken Shah, who is only playing his second First Class match, stands at the crease with a 69*, and seems to show a lot of potential. Mumbai stand tall at 302-3 at stumps

Saurashtra vs Karnataka:

Robin Uthappa makes his case known for selection with another 100 under hist belt. Uthappa scored a quick 108 from 109 balls before he gave a catch to the keeper. C Raghu and Rahul Dravid also put in 83 and 56 respectively to guide Karnata to 329/4 at stumps.

Tamil Nadu vs Baroda:

Baroda struggled to put a competitive first inning total up, with 5 wickets falling between 150 runs mark and 200 runs mark. Captain Jacob Martin led Baroda with 57 runs and was supported by Rakesh Solanki and Yusuf Pathan who both fell one run short of their 50's. Baroda ended up with only 263 runs on the board. Tamil Nadu got off to a horrible start, with their opener Dinesh Karthik getting run out for only 1 run. Then the out of form bowler Irfan Pathan struck early for Baroda, getting Ramaswamy Prasanna bowled for a duck. Tamil Nadu 13/2 at stumps.

Bengal vs Rajasthan:

Rajasthan gets bowled out for 193 with only two batsman contributing through out the innings. Rahul Kanwat and skipper Ajay Jadeja got 62 and 41 respectively. Bengaly bowler, Ranadeb Bose, picked up 6-32. Bengal got off to a shaky start, losing their first wicket with no run on the board on the 7th ball of the inning, but Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, and Subhomoy Das led Bengal to 80-1 at stumps.

The Wheel is Forever
I don't know how good he would be at ODI. Tests is where he would shine with the ability to bowl long spells, unlike some at the highest level.

Assuming the assurances bear out. They have promised a lot in the past. (What happened to a CEO and a web site, by the way?)
There are no guarantees that the current promises will be kept but the ones you have mentioned were made during Pawar's election campaign - in other words, doesn't mean ****.
