A look at these magnificent stats unravels the magnanimity of his contributions.

ODIs 292 271 34 9528 153 40.20 12 71
In ODIs, Dravid has scored over 9500 runs at an average of 40.20 with 12 hundreds and 71 fifties and is on the brink of becoming the 5th or 6th batsmen, depending on Lara's ability to get the required 339 runs as opposed to Dravid's 472 runs, to score 10,000 runs in ODIs following on from Tendulkar, Inzamum, Jayasuriya, and Ganguly. In the longer version of the game, he has scored over 9000 runs runs at a phenomenal average of 58.75 with 23 hundreds and 46 innings. Getting to the double of 10,000 runs in both formats of the game would be thoroughly deserved indeed. So far, Tendulkar is the only player who has achieved that feat.
This is a guy with a better test average than our very own maestro Tendulkar and easily overshadows the averages of players of the ilk such as Lara, Kallis, Hayden, Miandad, Gavaskar, Border, Waugh, Gilchrist, Viv Richards, Inzy and many other great batsmen. Amongst the current players on the circuit, Dravid has the best test average. The ones above him are thankfully retired or resting in peace, though not necessarily in that particular order.
For someone who has such impressive statistics, he is not always mentioned in the same vein or breath as a Tendulkar or a Lara. I guess the element of flamboyance associated with the previously mentioned players has a great bearing on how the cricketing fraternity perceives Dravid as a player. Think of Dravid and you invariably think of a cool, calm, dependable, astute, educated cricketer. Think of Sachin and Lara and your imagination runs wild with euphoric connotations of their sheer brilliance and immortal presence.
Here are some interesting stats about Dravid in comparison to his contemporaries.
• At home, Dravid averages 51.52 while the erstwhile Tendulkar sits very pretty at 55.24. However, in away tests Dravid averages a princely 65.28 compared to an equally impressive 55.52 by Tendulkar.
• Bring Lara into the picture and you will see that Lara’s overall average of 53.44 and his away average of 46.19 are dwarfed by Dravid’s feats. Ponting's away average is 51.34 though his home average is considerably higher at 62.91.
• Dravid has the 6th highest Test average of all time amongst past and present cricketers. A great achievement in itself. The ones above him are truly hall of fame entries -
Avg
DG Bradman 99.94
RG Pollock 60.97
GA Headley 60.83
H Sutcliffe 60.73
E Paynter 59.23
R Dravid 58.75
In ODIs, Dravid operates like a darts player picking his spots as he pleases. More often than not, he hits the bulls-eye with amazing regularity. For someone who was totally written off as a slow, boring batsman with a severe lack of innovation, drive or penchant for fast scoring, he has re-modelled his playing style. He didn’t squander his technique though. It remained intact but assumed a totally different proposition when faced with the need to accelerate. He doesn’t appear brash or wayward even when putting his foot on the gas. His amazing ability to pick the gaps is a great tribute to his rock solid technique and his hard work in striving to improve all the time.
I cannot think of another cricketer amongst current cricketers who seamlessly accelerates when required and has the uncanny ability to pick and choose his spots with such accuracy. Michael Bevan was one such player who possessed such a skill set.
Here are a few of his accomplishments in ODIs.
• He is the third highest run getter for India after Tendulkar and Ganguly yet interestingly he has only 12 centuries to his name. Tendulkar and Ganguly have 38 and 22 hundreds respectively.
• He averages 40.20, which is 4th highest amongst the Indians after Dhoni (48.90). Tendulkar (44.20) and Ganguly (40.65).
• He has 71 fifties to his credit, which is just one short of Tendulkar's 72 fifties. Ganguly has 60 to his name.
Indeed, India must be proud to have someone of the stature of Dravid playing for them. A mild mannered, intelligent cricketer takes pride of place in many fans’ hearts and rightly so. He deserves it.
