NZC announces 2006/07 contracted players

Players: Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, Stephen Fleming, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Jamie How, Hamish Marshall, Chris Martin, Michael Mason, Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Michael Papps, Jeetan Patel, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent

The players from last year’s list who have not been offered NZC contracts are Chris Cairns (retired), Craig Cumming, Chris Harris, James Marshall, Daryl Tuffey, Craig McMillan and Paul Wiseman.

The players who received contracts this year but were not on the list last year are Andre Adams (who returns to the list after an absence of two years), Mathew Sinclair (who returns to the list after an absence of one year), Jamie How, Peter Fulton, Ross Taylor and Michael Mason.

Sinclair obviously only got a contract because they wanted him to stay in New Zealand. We play so little Test cricket that was it really worth it?

What about Martin Crowe? NZ really need an opening batsman or two - so bring back Bruce Edgar!

Thought the contracts were pretty much as expected. Hope Dan Vettori gets to play this season - last time he had a stress fracture he was out for over a year.

What's the big deal about Sinclair? We know he's been found out countless times, especially as opener, and has often struggled to get a start. His declining form was highlighted in the team's woeful performances at that time and not surprisingly, he lost his place. How is he an option now? Likewise Lou Vincent.

Simply because Sinclair is not an opener. Never has and never will be - put him in at number 3 where he belongs.

The day New Zealand stop chopping and changing with their openers is the day SP rates Thierry Henry.

Can you name two openers who are worth persisting with for a long stretch? It seems Vincent and How are a decent pair, but once Papps was a decent option at the top, then they brought back Sinclair, then maybe Macca, and maybe even Matt Horne back again. They've got him opening the innings countless times when their patience wore thin, and predictably, he didn't score too many. Maybe How and Papps can be picked for the task, with James Marshall as reserve.
