I remember looking that up and his stats when opening and not keeping are much better than his stats opening and keeping iirc

Latham's numbers opening against top opposition are barely better than Munro's.
Yeah I know he's well padded by SL/Bang/Zim stats when opening (IIRC), but the Munro situation has just got me so frustrated that I feel like they have to try something? And maybe combining out of form looking Guptill/Munro/Latham makes me think even more that something has to change.

What's that theory? The definition of crazy is to continue to do exactly the same thing over and over again and hope for a different result?

That is this.

I still think Neesham is worth a go at 5 to try and get him some time at the creash before he has to unleash the Neesh.

I know they were only warm ups in Australia, but even Worker would give me more confidence than Munro at the moment. And I still believe that the Munro situation is putting pressure on Guptill to perform as well.

I would rather leave Williamson at 3, Taylor at 4. So for me it's either Nicholls or Latham that open with 2 Toes. And I would love to then go Neesh/Blundell/CDG and see how that goes.

Then your only question is Southee vs Henry and Santner vs Sodhi.

Maybe Guptill's injury niggle will open up the situation anyway. Saying that, not sure I have a lot of faith in Latham WC2019 vs Amir ATM. Fun times. Good thing we have enough in the tank ATM. Let's hope the ship can turn around for some of these bigger games.

after the world cup we need to learn from our mistakes and not just spam boult and southee in all formats. they need some games for those ipl contracts (tho do they really? they're known names in india now) but not every game.

barring the spinner, our test attack isn't changing any time soon so there's no reason not to have henry, lockie etc play as often as possible. tickner, jamieson and kugglejuggle should also get a good run in jamodis.

batting wise munro out, im annoyed at latham so he can be a test match opener only thnx, and again we want to protect the bodies of kane and ross (especially if ross wants to be at 2023). we can't have the team suffering from ross doing a hammy in an inconsequential t20. nzc obviously feel differently and rank the formats odis > t20 > tests because casual fans and money, but maybe pigs will fly and they'll realise no one remembers your jamodi performances unless they're absurdly atg.

toss everyone who isn't making the next cup, so sadly this could be lord colins last few games since i think he's like 33 or something. test match specialist cdg how good! im going to back nathan smith for 2023. ***y bowling as a 19 year old and he seems to be wayyyyy better with the bat than anyone predicted bar otago selectors.

the ultimate jamodi team below, and lets give some young uns captaincy practice too

guptill
seifert
young
nicholls (c)
blundell (wk)
neesham
nathan smith/josh clarkson/rival allrounder
santa
henry
whakamana express
tickner

this team will cop some heavy losses but it doesn't matter, only the world cup does. kane, ross, boult etc will still get odis just not every single odi we play. the 2023 side will be better for this development rather than the selectorial panic stations we've seen for the past 12 months.

I can’t see Southee getting many more IPL chances no matter how many internationals he plays. He barely took the field this season, and got smoked when he did.

Even I'm at the point of no return with both Munro & Latham now.

In Munro's case I resisted because 1) I've always had a soft-spot for him, and 2) I wasn't convinced Nicholls would be any better as an opener. But now I feel, he couldn't do any worse.

In the case of Latham, I've been hanging on to the fact that we needed someone other than KW & Taylor who can milk quality spinners in the middle overs without taking too much risk.

The fact he can't even buy a run atm, we might as well bring in Blundell, who's seems to have a mature head on his shoulders, and has taken every opportunity that's been put in front of him to date, including playing really well in that pre-WC series against Australia, who had the likes of Starc and co playing. So maybe in his case it's not the biggest ask in the world to introduce him against Australia.

We also have to really give some serious consideration in playing Sodhi vs. Australia, unless it's clearly a seamers track.

I understand Doull is not everyone's cup of tea, though he is arguably the only media figure who is criticizing certain players/selections. This team is just surrounded by yes men.

And Stead saying that he didn't think Edgbaston would spin? Jeetan Patel has taken 30 wickets in his last 3 games at the ground ffs.

remember the end of last summer when a rumour circulated doull and co. were told to shut up when they showed southee's odi record since 2015?

Didn't this thread used to be called "NZ Cricket Official Doom and Gloom Thread" or something? Was quite apt haha.

I don’t remember that, but it doesn’t surprise me. His record since last World Cup In ODIs has been poor.

I guess I just wasn’t surprised that he was getting picked because

A: “But he had a great game during the last World Cup!”
B: The fact that our selectors seem to mix up that if you’re good at one format of the game, you must be good at another one too! Guptill, Munro, Southee, Santner to a certain extent, Vettori even. But he can play ODIs, so surely he can play tests as well! I’m genuinely surprised that Wagner hasn’t had a go in ODIs, and will be good to see Ferguson get some tests soon hopefully...
C: Don’t you criticise our cricketers! Don’t you know that they’re the best in the country and we’re punching above our weight? We’re going to this World Cup as dark horses, and quite frankly if we make the semi finals that’s good enough for us.

The ODI team could definitely use some of Wagner’s attitude, at least. Bennett has the same sort of hard nosed approach, I think, as well.

I think they feel they have that role covered with Ferguson. Thanks to the 2015 World Cup with all those images of Southee and Boult coming in for a spell during the 30th over with three slips in and swinging it (and being endlessly talked up as a result) , they seem to be living off the nostalgia a little bit.

Southee's team RCB have been a disaster for many seasons now and the microscope has fallen on their players a bit. Southee had a few terrible outings in 2019 and the Indian circles have wised up to his recent limited overs form, I would be pretty surprised if he gets a contract in 2020. Boult should definitely continue to get picked on reputation alone. Bottom line being expect Southee's schedule to be freed up, don't think he'll be discarded or rested in the near future.

Not Terrible
Southee is going to be a legend when he wins us the next three games after being left out entirely up To this point

By the way, I've now been 100% converted to the 'pick Ferguson for tests' camp. He's got to be in the team for the Australia tour. The only question is who he comes in for, Southee, Wagner or the spinner?

I was thinking the same thing, getting pretty tough to overlook him. As much as I hate to say it, since he’s already been robbed of one Australian tour, Wagner might be the one to drop out. Does Ferguson open the bowling in first class?

I disagree, I reckon Wagner's durability and ability to get wickets with an older ball will be pretty essential on a tour of Australia.

Yep, Ferguson opens for Auckland.

now that southee's finally pulled finger in tests after a couple of years of lies and statistics then there's no room for lockie unless santa becomes test standard #7 with the bat and test standard with the ball. can't drop vargner, he's still the perfect enforcer type bowler imo. true, he's 10ks down on lockie but 9 over spells of bouncers is sensational.

lockie goes with the squad tho.
