He does seem a bit overworked. Either rest him from a format or split the captaincy between formats

He certainly shouldn't be our first choice spinner anywhere but he is decent enough injury cover away for Ajaz and was a contender for that role at home too. So bit early IMO.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Obviously work and family commitments have become more of a priority. I am pleased he got a final opportunity and acquited himself well in the SCG test. Can retire having enjoyed a few test wins too.

It's bizarre also in that does he really think he's the front runner for ODI/T20Is? Like I get on paper he has a good record in those departments but I don't think he'll make the 2023 WC squad or anything

But, fair play to him and he's made the most of his opportunities. He's done what was asked and probably should've played more tests. Will be interesting to see how he goes as a white ball specialist. Hopefully this means Ajaz is first choice red ball spinner now.

Nooo he had just taken his rightful role as dpecislist #8 batting allrounder ahead of spudner and spudhi

Reminds me of when Chris Drum got recalled to the test team because of injuries vs England in 02 and immediately announced he was retiring and it would be his final test.

On the back of T Astle's retirement from red ball cricket here's the squad for the NZ A game.

    NZ A squad
    Hamish Rutherford (Otago Volts) (c)
    Mark Chapman (Auckland Aces)
    Dane Cleaver (Central Stags) (wk)
    Jacob Duffy (Otago Volts)
    Cole McConchie (Canterbury)
    Edward Nuttall (Canterbury)
    Ajaz Patel (Central Stags)
    Glenn Phillips (Auckland Aces)
    Michael Rae (Otago Volts)
    Rachin Ravindra (Wellington Firebirds)
    Sean Solia (Auckland Aces)
    Will Young (Central Stags)

    Game 2 additions
Daryl Mitchell (Northern Knights), Tim Seifert (Northern Knights), Ish Sodhi (Northern Knights) and one more bowler to be added post the BLACKCAPS T20 series.

    Game 2 omissions
Mark Chapman, Ajaz Patel, Edward Nuttall and Sean Solia.

Game 1: January 30- 2 February, Hagley Oval.
Game 2: February 7-10, Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

The article clearly states Hamish Rutherford will open with Will Young.

Rutherford has been scoring lots of runs in white ball cricket but he gets into red ball cricket. Fair enough though, the man deserves a call up. I think the plans are afoot to replace Blundell at the top of the inning. I think in the long run Tom will keep and bat at no.6

Surprised at Michael Rae's selection but glad. That probably means Nathan Smith hasn't built up his loads for red ball cricket yet but absolutely stoked to see his name for the second match.

T Astle's retirement is a surprise. I thought he bowled fairly well at SCG. One less competition means easy run for either Ajaz or Will Sommerville. I don't reckon anyone else can put spanner in the works for Ajaz or Somerville unless Ravindra goes out and bags loads of wickets.

Not sure about Santner or Ish Sodhi making into the test squad soon. Although I won't be surprised if they again pick Santner :-)

Solia in the A team for the FC instead of the OD seems weird

Reading between the lines of selection, chances are Chapman may be picked for one day series? He's released from the NZ A squad for the second game. Likely he'll get a look in and should do IMO.

No Jeet Raval? I was hoping he gets a go to see if he can resurrect his career at international level. Has he gone out of reckoning fully then? I think he deserved to be played vs India A and they could have released Ravindra to Firebirds, would have helped Firebirds in the ford trophy. Tom Blundell is released to play Ford Trophy. I would have thought they will play Blundell in the 4 day as a warm up for test matches coming up.

For me, that seems yet another sign of an unhappy team environment (on top of Southee’s dropping in Sydney and Kane talking about being less involved).

Astle retiring is completely bizarre. Like I could understand him retiring out of frustration at not getting the opportunities, but he's retiring at the exact point where arguably he has just got into the box seat for the #8/spinner role, Santner has been given about as much rope as he can get and Somerville was disappointing in Aus?

With Astle out of the equation I wouldn't rule out a Sodhi recall from Larsen and co. Sigh.
