Unless he's dramatically improved his keeping, Seifert can't take the gloves in any format besides T20 (and even there its a questionable selection). If my understanding is correct, Phillips has more or less given up the gloves to focus on his batting - which doesn't suggest he'd be super competent in the role either. That pretty much just leaves Blundell, and as good a player as I think he is, I'm not sure if he's got the power game to bat 6 (though I wouldn't be averse to giving him a shot).
Cleaver? I have never seen him play but he seems to get runs at a decent clip. Is his keeping up to it?

Yes not too many shockers in my memory from Cleaver. Better play of pace-off bowling and some better knocks on a slow and holding pitch is what I'd like to have seen from him.

We all know they're just going to select Munro, don't we ...
No doubt under this coach, captain and selector. I'm a huge Kane fan but I don't understand why he can't trust young players. He was quite young too when he made his debut. It's time we move on from one or two players at least. Our bench strength thankfully is good now. It's time to change.

Some bitter truth to this. I do sense that strange selections, decision-making get a pass from our own public & most of the cricketing world in regards to NZC. Of course, the rest of the world is too busy following what their own team is upto. Hope this flop of an Australian gets more coverage. Otherwise its back to NZC giggling "well lets just lay low for a couple days and let everyone forget about this since no one cares about our cricket anyways and go back to making horrible selections/decisions like usual".

goood goooooood it begins

it took the best ever indian side assembled to finally defeat one of the worst ever new zealand sides 1-0 in very un-new zealand conditions.

i expected nothing from the australian tour and somehow got even less, but i expect to win this series. india are a quality side (this here might even end up their best side) but they hate coming here as much as we hate going there. i think non-cw indian fans are in for a rude shock if they get ahead of themselves.

We probably would have won or at least tied up the '17 series against South Africa, if not for the rain.

Haha I get that it sucks to hear the truth from an outsider but it's a fair assessment, nothing that dozens of posters haven't written here.

Whatever it takes!!!
Cricinfo's Anantha Narayanan had come up with his own ranking and points systems for tests played and NZ were 2nd even in his ranking for 2017-2019 period. You can say they are not as good as some of the other #2 sides in the past few years may have been but to question their ranking is pretty stupid, really. Its an objective metric and it works how it works. You cannot fault it when sides you don't like end up in rankings you think they don't deserve.

I'm not saying they didn't deserve to be No. 2. The points in that article about them underperforming against Australia for whatever reason are true though.

We seem to be doing very well when the lights are bright and the pressure is on at LO tourney's. Just the longer format is where we are struggling when the spotlight is on us. Our players are good, the domestic cricket is good. Most of these lads are capable. Like everyone has pointed out ad-nauseaum....a more comprehensive build-up (enough practice matches, gathering local knowledge), and then selecting the right players according to those conditions would solve 80% of the issue.

I don't think Guptill is going anywhere. He will stay in the LO sides barring horrific form or injury. I'd have Sears and Kuggs into the LO sides as well. Even for the tests with Kuggs. CDG isn't getting any younger. Kuggs can warm up the spot for Nathan Smith if anything. All in all, I think we have every reason to be competitive in the subcontinent 2023 wc.

I'm optimistic about Santner's chances to improve in tests. Ravindra as sole spinner may work but I'd be looking at Neesham/Santner rather than Ravindra/Jamieson.

munro must be out the gate now. dropped twice today, hit some streaky boundaries then out for 20. bennett and newton were all over him.

imo we should be nursing older guys who want to get to 2023 like boult/taylor and giving odi specialists like henry and santner the chance to lead the attack. since it's in india we'll need to look for 3 spin options.

i appreciate they want to win the t20 wc even if we don't care so it's time to start settling on a side for it. it looks like they're grooming southee to potentially skipper it. i know taylor wants to play everything but i think we need to make a call on both his form and what his body can handle. i'd rather he prioritise tests and getting to the 2023 wc like he wants to rather than risk him in t20.

Never really understood why Southee was given the chance to skipper/become the main leaderbowler thing for the t20 side. Nepotism? Always looking to fit him in and give him some type of role despite the downward spiral in form and reputation. He's a good fit for the test side in places like england and home but that's as far as his role should go. His spot belongs to the Kuggelejin or more preferably, Tickner. Kuggelejin as I've said before, is better suited for the longer format anyways.

Taylor is a good experienced head in the middle, but If KW plays, I don't think Rosco is needed. Slot in a Phillips. I'd even like an introduction of Josh Clarkson into the t20 side. Such a good striker.

I don't think people realise just how bad Guptill's been in recent years. Against the top teams (Eng, Ind, Aus, SA) he's been averaging in the teens since that 180 odd all the way back in 2017. Really don't see how that's acceptable, especially after his dismal World Cup effort.
