The Justin Kemp story

We first saw him as a giant medium-pacer who hit the deck and did little else. He then returned early in 2005 to the South African one-day side, but he made his mark in another area. His late order six-hitting put the South Africans in many match-winning positions, and his seam-up bowling supported the strikers well. He fell away later on, especially in Australia, and hasn't bowled in that period, while his batting was weaker. If you've been following the Justin Kemp story, you might know how he reinvented himself as a player, then made such an impact, then fell away, and how useful he is in the team for which he plays.

He's a dangerous batsman, but he has to be more consistent if he's going to play a Kluesener type role. He did have a major hand in winning one game in Australia, but aside from that he did very little.

It makes you wonder how many more layers there are to this complex and perhaps misunderstood cricketer, doesn't it? Maybe Kemp is likes onions...

We've heard a lot about the no-ball-six-balls already.

Kemp has only really had one period where he was very good in his ODI career, which was the series against England. He's a dangerous batsman, but he has to be more consistent if he's going to play a Kluesener type role. He did have a major hand in winning one game in Australia, but aside from that he did very little.

Kemp seems to be more of a Ricardo Powell or even an Afridi type player– a frontline batsman who only tries to hit big shots rather than play a very long innings. His battign wouldn't look so bad if he also bowled regularly, but as a specialist batsman, the stats don't look too good.

Anyway, did the small grounds in South Africa in the England series work to his advantage? I have yet to see him carry on those feats in big grounds, though he seems built just for that. That said, he should be fully fit to be fully effective in the next match he gets for SA.

Kemp doesn't only try and hit big shots though. Watch him at the start of his innings, he always takes some time before he launches.

Contrast that with Van Der Wath who goes bang from ball one generally. That's why Van Der Wath had a bigger say in SA's 434 chase than Kemp, despite Kemp being the logical man for the job at the end.

I've not seem much of Kemp, I don't think he really got a chance to do much in the recent tour of Australia. From what I've heard, he's an exciting player when he gets going - maybe needs to find another level of consistency before he'll cement a spot in the regular 1st XI?
