The side will play a series of one-day, four-day and Twenty20 matches in Cairns and Darwin, beginning in July.

Cullen Bailey (SA), Travis Birt (Tas), Mark Cosgrove (SA) Daniel Cullen (SA), Brett Dorey (WA), Brad Haddin (c) (NSW), Ben Hilfenhaus (Tas), Brad Hodge (vc) (Vic), James Hopes (Qld), Phil Jaques (NSW), Mitchell Johnson (Qld), Chris Rogers (WA), Shaun Tait (SA), Shane Watson (Qld)

I really like it. It's great to see Hilfenhaus and Cullen Bailey get a chance however you have to wonder where it leaves Cameron White.
- Adam Griffith (48 wkts @ 25) leading wicket taker in the Pura Cup last season he missed out?
- Marcus North 712 runs @ 50, unlucky too
- Also i am surprised no one mentioned Mick '0/113' Lewis, surprised the Aussie selectors have forgot about him, same on the selectors.

Is it just me or does it seem our A Team could easily beat most countries international teams?

Probably just you and most Aussie fans who haven't see the A players from Pakistan and India, i personally wouldn;t be suprised if they get a touch up by Pakistan A and India A. They probably slightly better then South Africa A, on the back of class players like Jaques, Cosgrove and Tait (well class at this level).

There are many players in these three 'A' sides who could make their respective national team. Hence, it is very possible for one of the teams to beat an International side, but not at all surprising if they lose any matches. :)

While I don't think that that particular A side is all that great as a team, given that it isn't a second XI for Australia even, you'd have to think that in Australia the home side would be favourites. Then again, Darwin and Cairns aren't exactly home turf for most of those players, so you never know who the conditions will favour.

The main interest will be how young guys that few of us have seen extensively go. I hope the series is televised, it'll be great to watch.

Well predicted starting XI:

Jaques
Birt
Rodgers
Hodge
Watson
Cosgrove
Haddin
Cullen
Johnson
Tait
Dorey

looks stong & solid
Not a bad team but the order looks pretty wrong

Keeping the same squad:
Jaques
Birt
Cosgrove
Hodge
Rogers
Watson
Haddin
Cullen
Tait
Dorey
Johnson

Wouldn't mind a bowler who could bat...or a specialist middle-order bat.

You both seem to rate Cullen batting high for some reason, he can bat, but i would think Johnson and Dorey are slightly better batsmen. Also Birt is a middle order batsmen. For me something like this:

Jaques, Rogers, Hodge, Watson, Cosgrove, Birt, Haddin, Johnson, Dorey, Cullen, Tait

Hodge definately at 3, i dont think Cosgrove deserves to have that role in front of him yet...

He's not talking about other team's A sides, he's talking about full sides.

Reminds of the time people were claiming that NSW would beat any side in world cricket except Australia...

Wouldn't it make sense to open with Cosgrove and Jaques? Granted Cossy doesn't open in FC games (I think), but he's had some experience there in one dayers at least.

Edit: He's opening for Glamorgan right now, so I guess he and Jaques would do it.

At their peak a few years ago (with all international players playing) they would've beaten most at that stage. Now there's better international competition, and NSW batting has gone down the gurgler with all the retirements.

I certainly think White's a bit stiff, he did a reasonable job for Victoria in OD cricket this year. Selectors obviously don't give much weight to previous performances for Aus "A" either. But in the end, I'm happy to be patient with him - he's always had designs on being a batting all-rounder, and that's what he is going to end up being.

Besides him, I'd say that Griffith was definently stiff, but I'd say that with Dorey in the side, they didn't want to go two relatively similar players - neither of whom are the greatest OD bowlers.

No, a lot of people said they would, but there is no knowing how an untried player will go when subjected to the pressures of International Cricket.

I thought Birt did (and I know that he did last season [2004/05]) open in OD cricket. Wouldn't be suprised to see him open in the OD games. Rogers to open in FC cricket - might see him miss out on OD games, not known for being the best OD player (from memory).

It's worth remembering that at the time in question, most of the NSW players had experienced international cricket, or would.

A team like:
Taylor
Slater
Chee Quee/whoever
M. Waugh
S. Waugh
Bevan
Emery/Haddin
Lee/whoever
Nicholson
MacGill
McGrath

Teams very close to that played a few times. You might not have had Lee (Brett) and Taylor at the same time, but the rest definitely did appear together around the start of each season.

I believe there was a certain wicket keeper batsman that played a few games as a specialist bat for NSW in that era before moving to WA to take up a position behind the stumps. Chee Que out, Gilchrist in.

Nicholson and MacGill were both from WA originally. MacGill was already there but Nicholson would have moved over after Tubby & co had retired. Throw in Shane Lee, the older, fatter, not so talented brother of Brett instead who played a few one dayers for Australia in his time.
