yep he did it with success in the 96 world cup. his overall average opening is 49 from 9 games, so hes certainly capable of it.
yea looking at his overall record seems a strong candidate if not as an opener maybe as a middle-order possibility.

For Pakistan:

Saeed Anwer
Zaheer Abbas
Javed Miandad
Inzamam-ul-Haq
Mohd. Yousuf
Imran Khan (Captain and all-rounder)
Moin Khan (wicket-keeper)
Wasim Akram (Vice-captain, can bat a bit.)
Waqar Younis
Shoaib Akhtar
Abdul Qadir

So that's my list with 4 bowlers and 1 all-rounder who's better known for his bowling. Seems like my team'd be more dependant on good bowling and most of the Pakistan's success in their cricketing history has come from more good bowling then batting.
As for wicket-keepers I had to make a choice b/w Moin, Rashid and Bari. But I picked Moin there for his ability to bat well with Wasim Akram and being a part of winning side in World Cup 1992.
I think everyone on that list other then Shoaib Akhtar has captained the side. Not sure about Qadir.
For spinners, Saqlain could have been there if he was constantly playing cricket, but sad injuries.
I can't believe why someone would put Ejaz and Sohail over Yousuf. Yousuf's records are far more better then the rest two and he's had enormous experience by now.

Did you consider Robin Smith? I would argue that hes a better bet than Trescothick.
There's certainly a case there for Smith. Personally I preferred Tres because he scores his runs that much quicker with a not overly worse average & because he's a specialist opener.

I'd think Saqlain could reaplce Qadir without much of a problem.

Does look a batsman light IMO though.
