I'll agree to that - is there an actual reason for doing this - other than crowds and TV highlights liking fours and sixes?
The only thing I can think of is to avoid players injuring themselves running into the boundary trying to make a save. But that doesn't explain why, at times, the boundary is brought in five/ten meters, rather than one or two.
