he has huge wraps from everyone who has seen him play. lehmann (although i must say he is a tad bias towards SA) has said he is the most talented young batsman in the country at the moment. speaking of talented batsmen we also have travis birt (scored 99 on county debut), cameron borgas, callum ferguson, george bailey, dominic thornley...and none have played an international match. we have a fair bit to look forward too. :)
Birt, yes
Ferguson, yes although struggled a bit this summer just gone.
Borgas, no
Bailey, yes
Thornley is 27 - A bits and pieces one day player ala James Hopes, however a very solid FC batsman.

... Dave Hussey, Marcus North, Aaron O'Brien, COSGROVE is the main one, he wont only perform in the one dayers but also in tests. he might get dropped looking back at past performances by selectors over inconsistency. He will start well though.
Hussey is 28 - Good ODD player, average FC cricketer who has only had one good Australian summer when the vics won the shield.

North, 26/27 and no.

O'Brien, not yet.

Cosgrove, yes.

Does cricketweb have a Simon Katich is a crab/Jaques for pm bandwagon? I would like to join

yeah i was referring to thornleys worth as a batsman -- he seems very solid and is a very good fielder on most days. 28 is not too old as we have seen with mike hussey and brad hodge. someone we're forgetting is shane watson, while he hasn't set the world on fire yet, i don't remember flintoff being particularly good at 23 either. watson has shown in shield cricket that he is very useful as both a batsman and a bowler.

I'm a big Watto fan and see him as Australia's next long term #4 batsman (forget the bowling side of things as far as Test cricket is concerned).

i think he has scored 2 shield double tons and averages 48 with a respectable bowling average of 31. maybe he could be a bit like kallis - a batsman who is a half decent bowler.

That's what I always say. He's worthy of a top six spot in the batting line-up, while his bowling could be used for a good 10 or so overs.

Brad Haddin is quite possibly the next best batsman for ODI's after Cosgrove in domestic cricket.
Most likely, although I'd like it if the selectors looked towards the future and picked a Ronchi or a Hartley.

Yeah then they pick him, bat him at seven, and judge him on his bowling.

If Watson is to be picked in the Aussie team, it should be as a specialist batsman, batting in the top five, who can bowl ten 10 overs.

The gilly innings on Sunday was one of the most exciting things I have ever seen in ODI's. So many fours and sixes that you werent sure if it was a replay or start of play (they should have a replay watermark).

It was a good, fun game to watch and I cant wait till Wed, the second last Aussie match for a long, long desolate time. Hopefully Bangladesh can put up an entertaining fight, they definatley have the talent.

With regards to Watson, is there room for both him and Symonds in the team? If so, I have had it with roy, it seems he has 1 good innings then 5 horrifics ones and then another good one and the public seem to forget. Its getting annoying.

Oh, and did anyone see Mark Waughs phone go off during lunch, it has to be the most unproffesional presentation ever. It looks like the whole thing takes place in Brendan Julians parents garage.

we could fire it back up again for you. What was that tapping the ball back over the rope at Bracken? And this holding up an end thing is getting more and more pointless.

The "anchor" role would be legitimate if he actually turned the strike over. Katich perfects the block out the first 5 balls, take the single to third man off the last. Meanwhile you have Gilchrist 34 off 20 balls stranded at the other end while the fielding restrictions slowly fade away. It is a bizarre situation. You can't tell me Jaques, who scored 3 or 4 domestic run-a-ball centuries this season, can't "anchor" an innings.

Katich is only good for when you are chasing 220 odd and 50 from 90 balls is a good solid innings. Whenever he tries to accelerate and hit over the field he gets caught at mid off/mid on/mid wicket. It ***** me to tears.

Meh we are stuck with him for the World Cup now. I'm hoping Cosgrove debuts for him tomorrow.

Well he obviously isn't doing that poor of a job seeing as though we've recorded some ridiculous scores with him in the line up...369 against Sri Lanka, 434 against South Africa. Also, last match we were 0/90 off 10 overs...and he rotated the strike excellently....Katich never prevents us from getting large totals and can always play an anchor role. Anyway, 75 isn't a bad strike rate at all when you have guys like Gilchrist, Symonds, Ponting and Hussey around...

Whilst he has played somewhat of an anchor role, when we've got most of those really big scores he has got out early.

Katich scored 79 off 90 balls in that game against South Africa. Everyone else that got a start was scoring at above and well beyond a run a ball. If Symonds, Clarke and Martyn had faced a percentage of his 90 balls we would have made 500!

Whats the odds on Bangladesh for tommorow? Im sensing an upset, might make some good money. Have they included Cosgrove in the side? It would be strange for him to go there and not get to play.

It says something, doesn't it, the one time he plays a respectably paced innings it's on the pitch that required a lot more.

Anyway, if Jaques can average in the mid 40's, and all signs suggest he can, what the hell good is an opener who will never average more than mid-30's without drastic changes to his technique and temperament. We already have an opener averaging mid-30's who scores 25 runs more per 100 balls. Consider that, because it demonstrates exactly what the problem is, Katich is by definition one thing, less runs. He personifies fewer runs. This isn't golf, the higher score wins.
