All-Time Greatest Pakistani Team

Like lots of people I suppose I like doing up 'best ever' teams. In drawing up one for Pakistan, I've hit a bit of a wall in terms of filling in the last few places - I freely admit my knowledge of Pakistan's history in the game is not as thorough as it is for some other countries.

The people I'd definitely have in my XI would be:
Javed Miandad
Inzamam ul-Haq
Imran Khan
Wasim Akram
Saqlain Mushtaq
Abdul Qadir
Waqar Younis

As you can see, I find the bowling attack easier to assemble than the batting line up - aside from Javed and Inzi, I'm not really sure - Youhana has been v. good, but is he an all-time great? and I have no idea re: openers.

Do people have any thoughts - I'd love to hear them, plus any explanations of who you've chosen.

That list is very biased to the recent past. I would suggest checking out Hanif Mohammad, Fazal Mahmood, Zaheer Abbas as well as many other guys such as Intikhab Alam who were far more important than their records may suggest.

This has been done many times before on this thread. Anyway here is a selection

1. Hanif Mohammad
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Zaheer Abbas
4. Javed Miandad
5. Inzemam ul Haq
6. Imran Khan - Captain
7. Intekhab Alam
8. Wasim Akram
9. Wasim Bari
10. Saqlain
11. Waqar Younis

I have had the good fortune to see all of these and think they would make a great side. Those I reluctantly left out are
- Majid Khan - opener
- Fazal Mehmood - GREAT medium pacer in the Alec Bedser category
- Abdul Qadir - leg spinner

Stuff on Pakistan's cricketing history is harder to come by in Australian bookshops than stuff on Australia or England. :)

If you are really interested you can buy all types of cricket books online including second hand ones.

Second hand books can be quite cheap at times.

agree with most on that list but do you think saqlain will make an all-time pakistan xi ahead of qadir? i would have thought qadir would be an automatic selection?

You are right. I did put Qadir in first. But then I wouldnt have had another spinner. With Intekhab Alam (no mean leg spinner mind you) I got the option of playing another spinner because I could count on Imran and Intekhab at 6 and 7 in the batting order.

Some times all rounders DO affect the careers of specialists particularly if you have the problem/luxury of plenty as one always has with an "all-time" list :)

Edit : Once I had Intekhab as a leg spinning option it was better to have a different type of spinner. By the way, I did consider Iqbal Qasim (left arm orthodox) and Tauseef Ahmed (off spin) both excellent spinners but I think at his peak Saqlain was very very good.

I have a faint recollection of Naseem-ul-Ghani (off spinner) from the 1961 tour but it is a vague memory although I believe he was very good too.

In my opinion Nazeer Junior, was a very good spinner and much better than the likes of Qasim,Tauseef and Ghani, he was unfortunate not to have played much test cricket.Nazeer Later became an umpire and was terrible at it.

How can Pakistan's all-time greatest cricketer be the supersub or worse yet, not even in the test lineup?

I think he wants to make sure that Pakistani All Time team has no chance of defeating an Indian All Time team :)

Or maybe its a unique way to disparage the mighty Khan.

I just happened to be walking past a second-handbook shop in Nottingham yesterday evening and noticed that it was having a 'closing down sale'. This one was unusual because the previous time I noticed, it wasn't (most bookshops, on the other hand, have a permanent closing-down sale but never actually shut). The window carried loads of cricket books on display. Guess where I'm going on Monday (assuming it's open)?

<quack> The pub?
