20/Twenty Cricket: A Survey.

NZTailender

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
As a part of an assignment for TAFE (Aussie College type thing) I have to do a survey as a part of an assignment. Since it can be about anything and 20/Twenty being a hot topic I thought I'd do a survey on it. I also hope this is within the forum rules? Anyway, if I could get at least 6 people to fill out the following I'd be very happy :) You don't have to give your name if you don't want to, by the way.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No, Twenty20 should be used as a series opener, and perhaps in domestic comps, but thats all. Theres no time for it, and itd get old pretty quick.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): No, because people wouldnt get to see the international players play in one.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, because it attracts a different and new audience to the cricket (ie my friends will come with me, instead of just my brother and cousin...). Just as long as they dont have too much of it, this summer was perfect twenty20 wise.

How often do you attend cricket matches? (International, domestic, club)? /On occasion

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not):Yes, played as a knockout, would like to see it in the commonwealth or Olympic games. But not as a WC per say. I think I could watch it, if it involved medals.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not):Yes, it is a game of luck and not real cricket skill. It would also be a good revenue earner for the domestic game, but I don't think international cricket needs it.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not):If it leads more people into real cricket then I think it is a good thing.

Additional comments:They (players) treated OD cricket as a joke (international level) when it first game out. So maybe in 20 years we will have specialised 20/20 players and seperate touring squads for the 20/20 part of a programme.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No, I think 20/20 cricket should be left to the domestic level and at most, just a carnival type match to kick start a series. Nothing more.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): Not necessarily, domestic + series opener would be fine I guess.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes because it has seemingly gotten more people watching cricket. However it will be overkill if it takes over at international level.

Are you more likely to attend a Twenty/20 match than a Test or an ODI because of the short amount of time it takes up, and being able to go after work etc: No, not really, I would go on the weekend so it wouldn't affect my workdays...

How often do you attend cricket matches? (International, domestic, club)? Regularly/Often/Sometimes/On occasion/Hardly ever/Not at all: Regularly

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, only as a knockout tournament though, it would entertain the crowds...

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): No, I think it is exciting with international players like Symonds playing it (he wouldn't normally play for Queensland and would therefore take away the opportunity of him playing Twenty20.)

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, the format is exciting and entertaining for the crowds. The talks with the captains while they are on the field and batsmen departing it are entertaining and are unique to Twenty20...

Are you more likely to attend a Twenty/20 match than a Test or an ODI because of the short amount of time it takes up, and being able to go after work etc: Probably, mainly because it's cheaper

How often do you attend cricket matches? (International, domestic, club)? Regularly/Often/Sometimes/On occasion/Hardly ever/Not at all: Hardly ever

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No, the World Cup is enough.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): The very small (something like 6 or 8 games) comp they had this year in Australia was good, cause it doesn't take away too much from the OD and FC games

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, in that it can attract more fans to the game, and create more revenue for the domestic game, which has been sagging a bit.

Additional comments: It's pretty good, I just fear it will be overdone by the cricketing authorities looking to make some money

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No. Because 20Twenty cricket is pure entertainment and you cannot judge how good a team is based on a 20T match.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): Y. We need larger crowds in domestic cricket rather than international cricket. 20T in international could actually bring the quality of cricket down.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Y, but only for attracting crowds on a domestic level.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No. The way it's been packaged, it's all about novelty. A tournament like that would defeat the object.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): No. Getting to see the elite players have a crack every now and then it pretty fun

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): As long as it doesn't grow too big - yes. It attracts people who wouldn't sit around for a full day and increases their interest in cricket.

How often do you attend cricket matches? (International, domestic, club)? Regularly/Often/Sometimes/On occasion/Hardly ever/Not at all: Sometimes. Actually, quite regularly when I'm in delhi and there's a match at the kotla but been away for a few years in a cricketless land.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No, there are too many international competitions already - world cup, champions trophy, u-19 WC. Having one for 20-20 is not a good idea as it will reduce to an extent the significance of the world cup. And also because I don't consider it cricket in its true form. Having said that, I wouldn't mind a 20-20 world cup for non-test countries where cricket isn't very popular to get people interested.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): Not neccessarily. Countries where cricket is not big can introduce 20-20 to get people interested.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): For me, ODIs and Tests are good entertainment and I don't really care much for 20-20. But I find it a good way of getting people interested in cricket. And hence its good for that reason. But it should stay at that or else it will become not so good.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, it gives the lesser cricketing nations a realistic but small chance of winning and encourages their development as cricketing nations.

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): No, I don't see any good reason why it should be limited to domestic competition.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes, there is good potential for profit at whatever level or country it is played. Without the money lesser cricketing nations will struggle to develop and the main nations will stagnate, this format is also far more likely to get exposure in the media in the lesser countries. The format will also help to cover a different type of audience that longer format cricket cannot reach.

Should there be a 20/Twenty world cup in the same format as the current world cup? (Give reason why/why not): No. Twenty20 is suitable for a good night out as a one-off exercise - a bit of fun, if you like, and the occasional 'once per season' international challenge, but no more. If you play more Twenty20, it has to be at the expense of another form of the game (there is too much cricket already).

Should 20/Twenty be played exclusively as a domestic competition? (Give reason why/why not): No, a solitary international challenge per season or per tour is fine - a great curtain-raiser.

Overall, is Twenty/20 a good thing? (Give reason why/why not): Yes - great to introduce young kids to the game. It's exciting, but it must not overshadow 'proper' cricket.
