He's definately a born ODI opener. I don't know about tests really, it's probably going to be a while before he gets a real shot at the test side, but I'd have him as a middle order player, most likely. Particularly with Langer, Hayden and Jaques likely to have the test opening spots covered for a few years.

Thats a big call i'd feel

gonna have to disagree here, the WC may be a bit too soon for him because i really cant see who he would be picked in front of.
It's not really a matter of him being picked in front of anyone. Assuming there's 8 or so specialist bats picked in the World Cup squad, I'd imagine they'd be something like: Jaques, Clarke, Ponting, Martyn, Symonds, Hussey, Katich, Cosgrove. The only other obvious pick right now would be Hodge. Cosgrove is young, he's in great form, and if he keeps it up who would be better as a backup batsman?

Cossie is a fantastic prospect and is just a natural-born hitter. However, it's not his weight which is the issue but his fitness. As pointed out, there have been plenty of bigger dudes who've been able to make the grade fitness-wise but Cossie is short of what's required.

So the World Cup? No. Next World Cup? Should be in the XI by then so it's moot.

Position-wise, he's a decent ODI opener but in Tests, I think he'd be an excellent number 5 as he doesn't really have the defensive game for 3 or 4.

wouldn't gilchrist be part of the 8 specialist batsmen?, i would think so, but yea he would be the best back-up batsman he he maintains his form through this season & in to next season, but the only chance i think he has of making the squad is if the selectors dont go for a backup keeper in Haddin, which i think they will because its a lot of matches i think the selectors may want to give gilchrist the odd break during the tournament (presuming australia goes far). Thats why i saw the WC may be a bit too soon for him.

David Hussey he has performed for both Victoria and Australia A in One day matches.
Will be interesting too see how both go today.

David Hussey has almost 10 years on Cosgrove. I can't see Hussey being picked as a back-up batsman for the WC, if they have a settled first team. The selectors will want to bring youth in.

this world cup he wouldn't be able to go past Gilchrist or (hopefully) Jaques but after Gilchrist retires he could well fill that spot.

Tests he could bat at 4 and we could be rid of Hodge, than Hussey at 5 and Clarke/ Symonds at 6.

Exactly. We're not interested in that carry-on - I'm on this thread to chew the fat about Cosgrove's chances....

Cosgrove has started going about the right way of things to put his name in front of the selectors - he just needs to continue ensuring the weight of his runs on the board means he just cannot be ignored.

Mark Cosgrove

Despite what Darren Lehmann says, there is no way Cosgrove should be in the team now. He's only 21! Give him a couple more years in first class cricket and yes, his fitness should be improved.
I think it's great picking players of that age - provided they are outstanding talents. My view is that Cosgrove is of that ilk. Moreover, most of the best batsmen in Australia in the last decade or so, were given exposure to international cricket in their early twenties (Hayden, Langer, Slater, Ponting, Martyn, SWaugh etc). I don't think there's much doubt that such early exposure will also benefit, in the long run, Michael Clarke.

Surely Watson is the long-term 6?
for me he would be better at 4 or 5, he has the technique to bat their. While someone like Clarke would be a better #6.

IMHO, neither Symonds nor Watson is the long-term #6 at this stage, only because we don't know yet whether either are good enough to be #6. Watson's chances were curtailed by injury, and Symonds is yet to convince.

In which case, one of Cosgrove and Hussey will then not be picked (or will bat at 6)
