And looks like Lee Germon did indeed captain NZ on his test debut, but did so after debuting in ODIs as just a wicketkeeper.

Infact in all his test matches he both captained and kept wicket and captained all his ODI's except for the first two.
My turn? OK, all this talk of keepers reminded me of this chap.

Clue 1
Despite being his county's regular wicket keeper, all of his four test appearances came as a specialist batsman, with another player behind the stumps.

(goes away to check that I've got the facts right on this one ..)

His nephew, who has the same forename, also played test cricket, although not for England.
