I must admit I want to see the best umpires, and if the best series is the number one team V the number two team and the best umpires are from those countries then that is the way it should be:)

When Aust played in England I can never remember the Aussies saying anything other then the English umpires were the best in the world:cool:

Public Polls should be the default:@

Funny how little talk this thread got in its day (though the non-public poll is a disappointment). I bump it now in the hope that there might be some more discussion of the issue.

(I'm against Umpires standing in any Test involving their team, home or away, myself. Even if bias is only actually in existence in a tiny minority of cases, the suspicion is always there and makes any error that much harder to take)
Much more discerning members these days:ph34r:

An overwhelming "YES"!!! Because,

1. One home umpire stands in every ODI match except WC matches. And so far we haven't been plagued with "umpiring controversies".

2. People like Simon Taufel, has been constantly on tour, even more than an average player, and hardly gets to spend time with his kith an kin. One home umpire per test match can take away that disincentive.

3. After the current test series, Referrals will come into place which would take a lot pf decision making pressure from the on-field guys anyway. SO a possibly wrong decision can be corrected instantly, regardless of the neutrality of the umpires.

So, ICC should allow atleast one home umpire.
AWTA. Esp with the technology coming in. Reckon it will take a lot of the suggestions of apparent bias out of the equation.

On a side note, heard this morning one P Reiffel Esq. has been appointed to the international panel, though apparently he'll only be a third umpire in tests.

IMO all umpires for all internationals should be neutral/idependent. There are plenty of umpires out there either in the elite panel (or in the next tier down who could be given the training to enable them to step up) to enable this with a sensible rotation.

following on from this thought, there is a fair bit more the ICC could do in terms of bringing talented prospects up the umpiring ladder so there are more good choices there.

Not Terrible
I think with the modern day technology showing every umpires mistakes that any potential bias would be spotted quite easily and therefore avoided. Not a big problem for me at the professional level. The guys are out there in the name of cricket not for a team in particular.

Agreed. Made a thread about this once I think.
