Playing test cricket in their 40s

Pratters

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
A lot of players have done that it in the past. Any one has a list? Are their some who have done it in the recent past?

The more interesting question -

Will some one like Mcgrath or Warne do it? Or any one else you reckon. Walsh actually almost did and he bowled the best in the last portion of his career.

Only Lloyd, Stewart and Greenidge in recent times, then.

Hadlee must have gone very close.

Anyway, I think Warne is definately capable of it... whether or not he will is anyone's guess, but I would say not.

I think Paddles was about 38-39 when he retired. At one stage, our bowling attack was Cairns, Hadlee and Chatfield, all over 35.

John Emburey played a test in 1995 wouldn't have said that was that long ago....

i reckon if warne beleived he could get 1000 wickets he'd try, but he'd probably have to play unto 40yrs..... knowing warne wouldnt he 'want to be the best....by a long shot' ?

No chance.

A stalwart old-timer:

In 1933 at the age of sixty, S. F. Barnes, the great English test bowler, captured the bowling title in the Lancashire League with 109 wickets as the Professional for Rawtenstall.

By comparison, V. J. Hazare (India) won the League bowling title in 1949 with 105 wickets as professional for the same club.

Intersting Over-40 stats :

- Jack Hobbs scored a 100 first class hundreds after he was forty !!

- Hobbs scored 2440 runs at 58.1 per innings in tests in his forties
- He scored 8 of his 15 test centuries in his forties including a double century.
- He faltered in his last 4 tests tests scoring just 149 in 7 innings, till then in 23 tests between the age of 40 and 48, he scored
2291 runs
at 65.5
with 19 scores above 50 (in 23 tests)
including 8 hundreds
including one double hundred

PS : We have to remember that he was first included in an England side when he was 25 and missed cricket from the age of 31 to 36 when he was clearly at his peak. God knows what he would have achieved in both tests and FCC but for the first world war.
