Good to see Shamsur Rahman finally got an FC century. He is another one of McInnes' favourite pupils. The boy was not just getting a breakthrough in the domestic circuit.

That's the consequence of being in the Dhaka side though. Most of their reserve batsmen would make the first teams of other divisions.

Fatullah: Chittagong, with 8 second innings wickets remaining, trail Dhaka by 205 runs
Dhaka 500 (142.2)
Uttam Sarkar 62, Anwar Hossain 108 (252b, 16x4), Al Sahariar 71, Shamsur Rahman 103 (184b, 9x4), Sharifullah 69; Tareq Aziz 3-110, Shabbir Khan 3-127
Chittagong 289 (121.1)
Nazimuddin 67, Ehsanul Haque 72, Faisal Hossain 60; Arafat Sunny 5-68
Chittagong (following on) 6-2 (2.4)
Nafis Iqbal 1*; Mahbubul Alam 2-6

Two late wickets to Mahbubul Alam completed a strong Dhaka bowling performance as they press for a win against Chittagong. Half-centuries from the experience of Nazimuddin, Ehsanul and Faisal lifted Chittagong's overnight score of 71-3, before all three fell victim to Arafat and the tail caved in.

Khulna: Khulna, with 10 second innings wickets remaining, require 376 runs to beat Barisal
Barisal 283 (99.1)
Hannan Sarkar 74, Raqibul Hasan 73, Iftekhar Nayem 36, Ali Arman 32*; Humayun Kabir 4-100, Manjurul Islam Rana 3-45
Khulna 234 (88)
Imrul Kayash 47, Manjurul Islam Rana 41, Humayun Kabir 26; Tariqul Islam 8-88
Barisal 329-7 declared (73.1)
Iftekhar Nayem 48, Raisul Islam 143 (158b, 16x4, 2x6), Arafat Salahuddin 28, Ariful Haque 51*; Fahim Muntasir 3-67
Khulna 2-0 (4)
Monirul Islam 1*, Imrul Kayash 0*

A Tariqul Islam did pick up the final two wickets of Khulna's first innings - sadly both fell to Kazi Tariqul Islam, an opening bowler playing in only his second first-class match, rather than his senior teammate. With a significant if small lead, Barisal slipped to 46-3 before a maiden hundred from Raisul Islam pushed them to 329. Khulna have a tough task to save the match.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi beat Sylhet by an innings and 4 runs
Sylhet 200 (66.5)
Imtiaz Hossain 88, Golam Mawla 48*; Farhad Reza 6-54
Rajshahi 365 (113.2)
Rafiqul Islam 69, Naeem Islam 87, Anisur Rahman 70, Mushfiqur Rahman 31, Mahbub Alam 29*; Hasibul Hossain 3-64, Nabil Samad 3-72
Sylhet 161 (59.3)
Imtiaz Hossain 36, Golam Mawla 30, Sirajullah Khadeem 29; Mahbub Alam 4-20, Farhad Reza 3-48

Sylhet folded meekly on the third day in Rajshahi to hand the home side the maximum six points, ensuring they stayed top regardless of whether Dhaka win or not. Only four batsmen made double figures; of them no-one made more than 36. Farhad Reza finished with match figures of 9-102 - a career best.

Nafis Iqbal 49, Nazimuddin 53, Ehsanul Haque 63*, Dhiman Ghosh 32; Arafat Sunny 3-86

Chittagong batted throughout the fourth day to salvage two points and put a severe dent in Dhaka's title-challenge. Nafis Iqbal and Nazimuddin added 109 for the third wicket in the morning session, before a collapse of three wickets for one run brought the game back to life. Ehsanul and Dhiman remained cool however, and the game was declared a draw with 15 overs of the final session remaining.

Khulna 226-5 (82)
Monirul Islam 49, Imrul Kayash 83, Fahum Muntasir 30

Khulna batted out the final day of their clash with Barisal in a similar manner, with young opener Imrul Kayash scoring a career best 83.

Chittagong: Chittagong, with 7 first innings wickets remaining, lead Barisal by 362 runs
Chittagong 362-3 (91)
Gazi Salahuddin 165* (227b, 27x4, 1x6), Elias Sunny 74, Nazimuddin 53*, Ehsanul Haque 44*

A career-best 165 from opener Gazi Salahuddin formed the backbone of Chittagong's formidable opening day total as a strong batting lineup destoyed Barisal, who gave everyone bar keeper Shahin Hossain a bowl. Tariqul Islam, who claimed 8 wickets in the first innings of Barisal's previous game was smashed for 130 from 25 overs. Gazi and Elias added 173 for the second wicket, Nazimuddina and Ehsanul an unbroken 68 for the fourth.

Fatullah: Dhaka, with four first innings wickets remaining, lead Rajshahi by 329 runs
Dhaka 329-6 (90)
Anwar Hossain 105 (172b, 16x4), Shamsur Rahman 31, Mahmudullah 48, Sajjad Kadir 114*; Farhad Reza 3-69

In the potentially decisive top of the table clash in Fatullah, Dhaka finished the first day well on top thanks to hundreds from Anwar Hossain and Sajjad Kadir. Together the pair of wicket-keepers rescued Dhaka from 144-5 to pile the pressure on league leaders Rajshahi, after Farhad Reza had continued his excellent bowling form to claim three early wickets. Khaled Mashud had three victims behind the stumps, all caught off the seamers.

Khulna: Khulna, with 10 first innings wickets remaining, trail Sylhet by 274 runs
Sylhet 284 (84.1)
Saif Mahmud 35, Alok Kapali 60, Golam Mawla 106* (162bm 12x4), Golam Mabud 27; Humayun Kabir 5-106
Khulna 10-0 (4)
Monirul Islam 0*, Sajjadul Hasan 8*

Golam Mawla played a lone hand for Sylhet, who fielded two debutants in keeper Arman Hossain and seamer Sherhan Sharif, to leave the match wide open after the first day's play. Only Arman provided much support for Mawla, the pair adding 70 for the eighth wicket after Sylhet had stumbled from 94-1 to 193-7. Alok Kapali had earlier played a stroke packed 60 on a pitch that appeared to favour the spinners after just a day's play.

Interesting to see Arafat Salahuddin so high. Last year he was a seamer who batted, now he is a genuine number six who can bat. Good to see Uttam there as well.

Good to see Dhiman doing well...... according to McInnes (the former U-19 coach) he was the most promising batsman along with Aftab in the 2004/05 U-19 group.........with Mushfiq now playing in the national team and Saghir doing so well for the 'A' team and Dhiman and Anwar Hossain starting to mature, it should give Mashud enough clues to retire from international cricket and stop whining about getting dropped

NCL final round started today. Here's my first day report

National Cricket League Title Race in Balance

The tenth and final round of national cricket league started today. After 9th round Rajshahi and Dhaka are jointly leading the table with 36 points.

Current holder Rajshahi in a bid to retain the title are facing third placed Chittagong in the away match. One the other hand, Dhaka has a home tie with the bottom placed Khulna at Fatullah Stadium.

The other last round match between Barisal and Sylhet will start on March 17 at the neutral venue Fatullah Stadium.

In the opening day both Rajshahi and Dhaka consolidated their position and kept their title dream alive. At Chittagong, Rajshahi finished the day with 325-9 while Dhaka ended restricted visitor Khulna for 286-9.

Rajshahi - Chittagong
At the close of the first day of the final round Rajshahi posted 325-9 against host Chittagong at Chittaging divisional stadium. Naeem Islam and Farhad Reza scored two contrasting fifties to take their total over 300 run mark. Naeem made a sedate 68 off 127 balls to consolidate the Rajshahi innings after a wobbly start, which saw the visitors tottering at 41-3 by the 16th over. After notable middle order contributions from Anisur Rahman (36), Mushfiqur Rahman (31), Hasanuzzaman (28) and Suhrawardi Shuvo (26), national discard Farhad Reza scored a quick fire 51-ball 55 with five boundaries and four sixes

Saju Datta of Chittaging bagged 4/108 while Waskurunee Palash and Elias Sunny netted 2/14 and 2/43 respectively.

Dhaka-Khulna

At Fatullah Stadium, Khulna opted to bat after winning the toss and posted 286 for 9 at the close of play. Khulna opener Imrul Kayes scored a brilliant 78 runs off 108 deliveries with 11 fours and two sixes.

At the middle of the Khulna innings, they lost six wicket in the space of 94 runs but tailenedera Fahim (39), Selim (25) and Ziaur (22 not out) frustrated the home attack.

Mohammed Azim of Dhaka took 4/53 and Rashedul Islam Sumon grabbed 3/80 dominating in the middle.

Dhaka in dire straits
CricBD Staff
13 March, 2007

Title aspirants Dhaka fought back following a dramatic batting collapse in the tenth and final round match of the National Cricket League on Tuesday when the home side reduced Khulna to 88-7 in the second innings at close of second day.

Dhaka looked to be totally out of the race when they were all out for a meagre 87 in their first innings in reply to the visitors' 288 at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium, which saw a total of 19 wickets fall on the day.

Left-arm spinner Manzarul Islam Rana ran havoc in the Dhaka first innings with a five-wicket haul but Khulna's decision to bat again in spite of a 201-run lead instead of forcing a follow-on proved fatal. With two days remaining, they had a handy lead of 289.

Title contenders Rajshahi, who started the decisive last round level on 36 points with Dhaka, however, took an edge against Chittagong at the Chittagong Divisional Stadium as the tourists were within sight of taking a first-innings lead.

DHAKA-KHULNA

Young pacer Mohammad Azim captured the last wicket in the fourth over of the morning to return with figures of 5-54 as Khulna ended on 288, having added just two runs to their overnight score. But it only paved the way for Khulna new ball bowler Ziaur Rahman and Manzarul Rana to rip through the Dhaka first innings.

Ziaur started the carnage with three wickets for 29 runs in 13 overs while Manzarul was the wrecker in chief by claiming five wickets for 25 runs from very tidy 22 overs.

Azim, however, did not lose heart by his team's disappointing batting performance as he grabbed three wickets to see Khulna tottering in their second innings. Sharifullah took two wickets.

Dhaka needed something special to turn the table and regain the title but the fact is that inform Manzarul was still at the crease on one.

CHITTAGONG-RAJSHAHI

Chittagong rode on a 141-run opening partnership between Gazi Salahuddin and Nafees Iqbal to score 239-6 before stumps were drawn with the hosts still 108 runs behind Rajshahi's first innings total.

Salahuddin scored 79 off 114 balls with the help of a dozen fours while Nafees chipped in with 77 off 171 deliveries that saw nine fours and a six. Despite the bold start, the home team lost their way as Sohrawardi Shuvo picked up three wickets for 57 runs. Elias Sunny was batting on 31.

Earlier Arif Hossain remained not out on 42 as Rajshahi were all out for 347 after resuming on 325-9.

Glad to see Mohammad Azim has taken all those wickets, that too on a generally low-slow Fatullah pitch. He is still young enought to be eligible for the U/19 team and can already bowl at 80 mph. He may be our next Shahadat Hossain (though I sincerly hope he is smarter than Shahadat and be more like Mashrafe).

Sonargaon Cricketers made a flying start in the Independence Cup cricket tournament when they inflicted a 52-run defeat on Mohammedan Sporting Club in the opening match on Thursday.

In absence of leading cricketers of the country, on national duty in the World Cup and touring Sri Lanka with the A team, both the Premiership sides roped in guest players who dominated the match at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium.

Brothers Union captain Hannan Sarker, who opened the innings for Sonargaon, blazed in a 64 off 68 balls to help his side score a fighting 236 before being bowled out in 49.1 overs after electing to bat.

Hannan, who cracked nine fours and one six, shared 53 runs with Al Shahriar Rokon for the opening wicket and the middle-order built on the good start with wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh producing a better than run-a-ball 44.

Mohammedan in reply, were bundled out for 184 in 44.2 overs with all seven rival bowlers being successful.

Young Pegasus all-rounder Sharif Ullah top-scored 34 while guest players Farhad Reza and Ehsanul Haque Seezan each contributed 32 runs.

Victoria are the other team involved in the three-team competition.

I should really do a full NCL wrap-up, shouldn't I? Particularly as anyone reading this would be unaware of who won the whole thing.
