The Great Ajit Agarkar thread

Is it true that Ajit has been named captain of the Mumbai Ranji team?If its true, what is it with Mumbai and big-eared people...(remember Sairaj Bahutule?)

As for the Bond movie dunno if AA might pull off in the lead role but that new guy in the lead role is not very appealing as 007...But the real great news is Gulshan Grover as the villain in Casino Royale.Going too much off topic,am I?

Just a very ordinary bowler if he retires now no body would remember him in 2 years time
AA is a legend and he would be remembered even if he had not scored any runs or taken any test wickets.

Example : His duck sequence versus the Aussies.

Why is AA a Cricket Web icon, though?

When I joined here in 2002, it was as plain as the ears on his face that he was the Greatest Living Indian - I accepted it as fact and never really questioned it. I suppose there is a theological explanation, but I'm dashed if I can find it.

The thing is, by almost being tempted to question it, am I guilty of heresy?

The guy keeps creating records and betetting some records he has broken in the past :D

Ajit Agarkar (5/44) produced the best ever bowling performance by any bowler at this venue, bettering Australia’s B.A.Williams’ 5 for 53 against New Zealand on November 3, 2003.
#
Agarkar’s second five wicket haul overall is his best ever performance at home, bettering his 4 for 25 against Zimbabwe at Kanpur on 11.12.2000. His career-best is 6 for 42 against Australia at Melbourne on 9.1.2004.
#
Agarkar is now the fourth Indian bowler to have claimed 5 wickets in an innings against Sri Lanka in India, joining Robin Singh (5/22 at Gauhati on 22.12.1997), Javagal Srinath (5/24 at Kanpur on 7.11.1993) and Manoj Prabhakar (5 for 35 at Hyderabad on 18.2.1994).
#
Incidentally, the previous best bowling performance for India at this venue was also in the name of Agarkar, who had taken 3 for 35 against Sri Lanka on 30.3.1999.
#
Agarkar, with 8 wickets in two matches, is the leading wicket-taker at Poona.

Hey Magsi,

Its an internal 'joke'. Dont take it seriously and ignore the
'down with SJS the infidel'
chants that follow this post of mine.

SJS might have written it out as an internal joke and Pratyush's post though being ok is hardly on target why AA is a legend (or a future Hall Of Famer) :D

But seriously, its all relative actually...Dont compare AA with bowlers from other nations,we can do it later.Consider Zaheer,Balaji,Nehra who have been most of the times unfit...AA's got better bowling average than the above mentioned, has many more wickets, economy rate being about the same, bats well,is an outstanding fielder (and the most underrated by the way)

AA has been right through there for the past 8 years in the team fighting back his place in the team without the full support of his captain and team management as the selectors just could not overlook a guy who has contributed so much in the Indian victories.

And its not just keeping his place in the team,if he would have been selfish,he would have bowled defensively but he constantly wanted to take wickets for the team and went for some runs in the process...Tell me what have Pathan,Zaheer,Nehra and Balaji done more to get the media attention and spotlight they constantly get?(And AA is better off without it)

But still there's room for improvement and being a hard-worker he'll improve to a great extent.

And if anyone does want stats,I've got them roughly...

*Fastest 50 wickets in ODI's
*225 wickets @ avg abt 27 (Kapil Dev - 253 wickets @ avg abt 29)
*Fastest 50 runs by an Indian in ODI's (21 balls)
*Highest ODI score - 95 when he was sent at No. 3 against WI
*Century at Lords
*Match-winning 6 wickets in the greatest overseas victory in tests for India in recent times at Adelaide
And many more achievements being there and many more to come...(Count the 5 ducks if you want to :D )

Has any one looked cooler?

The great man has become a dad as Jono said and he is also going strong having taken the first two wickets of the Lankan inning.

A living legend, if ever there was one.

Queen of Deccan!

From a newspaper:

PUNE: While Irfan Pathan proved ineffective and S. Sreesanth was sent on a leather-hunt by the Sri Lankans in the fourth ODI here, it was the stone-faced Ajit Agarkar who made merry and did the trick for India.

Under excellent cricketing conditions at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the heart of the city, Agarkar, fondly adorned by the sobriquet for Pune - "Queen of the Deccan", bowled a memorable spell restricting the islanders to a score of 261 with one ball to spare in the allotted 50 overs.

225 wickets in 144 matches at an average of about 27...not bad, right? And for an Indian pacer, great!

And going by the current ODI scores the teams have been putting up in 50 overs economy rate of 5 isn't bad either(though he could improve a little there),if he is picking up two wickets per match on an average thats fine

Yesterday he atleast got some recognition for his efforts but many of his 2-fors- and 3-fors- have gone unnoticed because of either pathetic performance of the team in other departments or someone overshadowing with a great performance...
Haha thats where the Indian Selectors have come right for once.. Agarkar does well .. and then he craps up in a match.. and they quickly drop him cause they know whats to follow would be worse than a bird flu epidemic... then a few months later he gets another call, picks up another bag of wickets.. then he does crap in one game and quickly gets dropped again... that the way he keeps his average intact ,.. Clean strategy in agarkars case..thank you very much.

That reminds me that I cant remember the last time when Agarkar played 8 ODI matches in a row...since the start of his career...Another record for our dear AA at Pune!
