ok, well heres my view of a few NZ players...
Bond - reasonable with the ball, spectacular with the bat
Mills :I- better batting technique and execution than bowling!
Harris :undecided:- his bowling was a little disapointing, would have been ineresting had he tied the aussies down (though, obviously not since nz batted... well, poorly )
Sinclair :rolleyes:- still likes thrusting bat aimlessly at balls missing the stumps... sigh
Vincent : to hard to say, first ball duck doesn't tell you much, a tad unlucky. keeping so-so.

8D: nice! beautiful bowling... best of the dismal black caps
Fleming !: it would be good if he started to lead from the front, a dropped catch and a quick 12 runs at the top... pretty poor!
Styris :I: again, hard to say. looked ok with the bat, but will have to do better to keep a spot if he isnt going to bowl.
Tuffey : why do they pick him? why??? he needs to learn a little thing called control. at the top level you need it.
Oram :undecided:: he looks a bit complacent to me, maybe he isn't but he looks it. bowling was average, batting was shortlived, alos average.

: what a sad birthday he had. i would have liked to see him bowl actually. its also quite poor the way he jumps around at the crease at the start of his innings. its called a front foot defensive... :rolleyes:

So what do you guyz think ? This was an off color performance from Nz or an expected one ? Without Cairns and Macmillan the batting would have struggled anyhow...

I think its just one of those things that happens when teams need a massive score. They either run it very close or fail abominally...
poor alround performance by the black caps though. although i think in the field they were pretty unlucky... edges going for four, balls being french cut etc...
Full credit to Aus though, a complete performance, until the last wicket partnership of Bond and Mills with those dropped catches, but we all do that when that situation arises eh...

Heres what I think:

Australia just completely outplayed NZ and they would have beaten any team yesterday, it was one of those performances where everything was in the slot.

I seriously doubt now that Australia will lose the rest of their matches in Sri Lanka.
The squad NZ has in Sri Lanka is probably good enough to play a competitive match against the likes of India, England etc but it was just a different level against Australia & when you're missing key players it was always going to be difficult.

I agree with Tim. Oz would have beaten anyone yesterday and must be rated as red hot favorites to win the comp.

It was another one of those nearly performances from the Black Caps. The Aus top order will take any attack apart & I give our boys credit for keeping the in form Hayden quiet - something Pak couldn't do recently. Unfortunately Gilchrist was overdue for a blast.

I don't think it was a good day for any of the quicks if they were fractionally off as even our tail gave the Aussies a bit of stick. I would have liked to have seen our seamers bowled in short bursts and change ends to mix things up when they started to get hit - same theory as rotating the strike for batsmen etc. I would have brought Bond off earlier when he did not get a break thru after 4 overs & was getting hit or at least changed ends.

I also question why neither Astle nor Styris got a bowl - Styris got NZ best figures in his last ODI in WI & Astle has been effective at restricting scoring. If we select a team with 8 bowling options we may as well use them when we are having trouble restricting the scoring!!!

I don't think Tuffey should get the chop as this was probably his worst return in ODI since the SA series some years back. Since then he has pulled things around and had been one of our more consistant seam bowlers in both forms of the game. From what I saw his line wasn't all that bad but he and the rest of the bowlers were about 2 feet short of where they needed to be, so the ball sat up nicely asking to be spanked & it was. I was more concerned with Mills as he is supposed to be good 'at the death'. Vettori was outstanding and Oram was as good as the rest - all the seamers were guilty of serving up a boundary ball late per over.

Attacking fields are always going to conceed a number of boundaries and I think we should have kept up on Martyn a bit longer once he started to swing. Until then he had been restricted in his scoring strokes and was needing to improvise to score & had created 2 edges. By posting the off side sweeper we gave him a wider range of shots to score from on the off and he played himself in to mount a score.

I am a fan of Sinclair but I would like to see him a bit lower in the order. Like many batsmen he does not go too well exposed to the new ball early if our openers fail, yet he is one of the few batsmen in the team able to get BIG scores in ODI & Tests.

I don't know that I am a fan of Fleming opening the innings either with 2 of our best at the top, neither a specialist opener and both are slow to move their feet early on - I definately don't like it when we only have 4 specialist bats in the side to start with.

If Vincent is being used as an opener in Test matches then I can't see why he doesn't open in ODIs as well - I know he failed in the Tri series but that was b4 he appears to have settled there in the Tests.

My main concern is the team selection being at least 1 specialist batsman short, especially when the 3 all rounders have had more success with the ball than the bat. I would even look at spreading the all rounders in with the batsmen, rather than have a middle / lower order of all rounders. Harris had success at No 4 in the WI & perhaps Sinclair at 5.

Maybe if we are to persist with these selections then we should consider promoting one of the all rounders up the order as a pinch hitter to take on the bowlers if we loose an earley wicket in the first 15 overs. You just can't afford to let the opposition attack achieve total dominance so early on without trying to change the mix when your resources are so limited. On yesterdays performance even Bond could be thrown in and told to hit out - another reason why I would like to see Nevin in the team or McCullum.

A bad day at the office but no cause for panic yet. Mind you if we have a full squad with the same result at home to India then the alarm bells should ring long and loud!!!!

New Zealand have to look at the Good things now. Bond and Mills batted well although with Aus thinking they had won the pressure had been let off. Vettori's bowling was awesome. To only get 25 runs off his 10 overs when u have world class batsmen at the crease is good on any pitch but when the rest of your bowlers are going for 60, it is great.

I don't understand why styris and astle didn't bowl

Tuffey showed he couldn't bowl under pressure in the windies... remember the windies needed about 14 or 16 or something to win off the last over and tuffey bowled short balls and chanderpaul did it with ease... thats just plain poor, he didnt even make the batsmen work for it.

Australia are just in awesome form, their key players have all hit form together at the right time. Martyn is the most important player in the middle order, if he scores runs australia win.

Mills is a far better batsman for where they are placing him in the order..he should be promoted to 3 or 5 and Bond could develop into an all-rounder aswell if he keeps going like he is.

You only have to go as far back as the West Indies when Tuffey conceded 50 runs from 4 overs in one of the ODI matches, i get so frustrated with him, surely he's on his last life.

But I will continue to demand that NZ starts to select their teams properly i.e. 5 batsmen/1 all rounder/1 wicket-keeper/4 bowlers. Common sense has to prevail & it can't be up to these bowlers who can bat to do the job. NZ has to start looking at guys like Peter Fulton, Michael Papps etc who are just straight batsman, rather than picking guys like Sulzberger, Oram who bowl & are useful with the bat because we will continue to lose ODIs too often.

Yeah good points. Peter Fulton should be an interesting guy to watch this season, hopefully he does well and gets a look in... class...

hopefully Butler will come on to partner Bond and Cairns, with Tuffey as the 4th seamer

I like him because he is young - only early 20's, tall & hits the pitch to get bounce, & he's strong.

I don't like him as a strike bowler but as a workhorse in the middle overs
funny thing is he seemed to have turned things around at home but has lost it again off shore

I read from Hadlee some time ago that he needs a lot of bowling and looses form after any sort of break - he performs well if you can keep him bowling a lot of overs - maybe he is better suited to Tests, but I have yet to see anyone perform as a viable alternative - Franklin was being touted as a possible replacement for Cairns but hasn't been seen since the Tri Series.

maybe we wait until O'Connor is back from injury as I would like to see left arm in the lineup!!!!!

no disrespect to Scott Styris but i would rather see Harris in the ODI team as a batsman simply because he can work an innings similar to Bevan. I would still keep a medium pacer like Oram for bowling variety to take the pace off the ball, and he supposedly can hit and is above average in the field.

it gets a bit frustrating when i don't get to see any of the domestic game to see who's who doing what.....

just to keep things in a bit of perspective the Aussies had just beaten Pakistan by their (OZ) 2nd highest margin in ODI so we were not quite that bad (just don't mention Pakistans current form too much) !!!!!
